Tyler Brogan and freshman
Natasha Sortland each championed their races at the Suffolk Short Course Classic Friday at Franklin Park, with Brogan leading the men's team to a victory and Sortland pushing the women's team to a second-place finish.
Men
- With a team score of 28 places, the men's team claimed first at the event for the second year in a row.
- Brogan ran a 15:27.80 on the 5K course, taking the lead on the final leg of the race to emerge victorious. It's his first career win of a cross country event.
- After Brogan, freshman Ryan Sarney opened his collegiate career with a 15:42.10 time to earn fourth place.
- Graduate student Robert Oehrlein finished sixth with a time of 15:50.90.
- Senior James Pothier came in ninth with a time of 15:54.30 and classmate Anders Narita rounded out the Huskies' scorers with a 10th-place finish and a time of 15:55.50.
Women
- The women's team scored a 39 and finished second behind UConn.
- Sortland finished with a time of 10:45.20 on the 3K course, beating the next runner by 3.4 seconds to claim the women's title in her collegiate debut.
- Freshman Keira Gamily finished third overall and second on the Huskies with a time of 10:52.40.
- Junior Shannon Trevor ran a time of 11:17.70 to finish eighth and senior Juliet Bussell came in right behind her with a time of 11:18.20 in ninth.
- Rounding out the Huskies' five scoring runners was senior Sarah Petersen, who finished with an 11:57.30 mark in 18th place overall.
Following this performance, the Huskies move on to regular-length competition next weekend at the Nassaney Invitational in Smithfield, Rhode Island Saturday, Sept. 9.
