BOSTON - The Northeastern University baseball team (14-8, 2-1 CAA) finishes its stretch of New England games this Wednesday, March 26th with a home game against the University of Connecticut (10-11, 0-0 Big East) at 2:30 p.m. at Friedman Diamond. Northeastern then heads on the road for the second weekend of conference play, facing off with the Stony Brook Seawolves (10-11, 1-2 CAA) in a three-game weekend series beginning Friday, March 28 at 2 p.m. All four NU games this week will stream on FloCollege, while Wednesday's game can be seen on NESN.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW:
LAST TIME OUT:
- The Huskies faced off with the Towson Tigers in the first CAA weekend of the year - after falling in extras to the Tigers in game one, the Huskies responded with a 10-0 victory on Saturday in seven innings, and a 6-2 series-clinching win on Sunday, in which Northeastern didn't allow an earned run into 8.2 innings into the game. In all, Husky pitching held a 0.67 ERA on the weekend and struck out 25 batters, walking just one. All three Northeastern starting pitchers, Charlie Walker, Aiven Cabral, and Jordan Gottesman, along with reliever Brett Dunham all worked 5.0+ innings on the weekend without allowing an earned run. Cabral threw the second complete game of his career, throwing all seven innings in a shortened game two. Sophomore center fielder Ryan Gerety led the way offensively with a .400 batting average, including a 3-for-4 day on Sunday with a pair of RBIs. Fellow outfielder Harrison Feinberg drove in a team-high six runs on three singles and a home run.
CLIMBING THE LEADER BOARDS:
- Through six weeks, the Huskies find themselves ranked in the top 20 teams in the nation as of Monday in seven different stats, all of which lead the CAA:
- Saturday's shutout over Towson was the team's fifth shutout of the year - the Huskies lead the nation in that stat, tied for first with Iowa and Southeastern Louisiana.
- Northeastern has stolen 68 bases so far this season, which is the sixth-most in the nation - the Huskies are also sixth in the nation in steals per game (3.09).
- The Huskies' 1.18 WHIP is good for ninth in the nation, and their walks per nine (3.14) is 10th-best in the nation.
- The team's 3.65 ERA is the 16th-lowest earned run average in the country
- Northeastern has allowed just 7.48 hits per nine innings, which is the 19th-best mark in the country
RECENT HISTORY:
- Northeastern and UConn have met five times in the past three seasons, with Northeastern holding the advantage in those five games, 4-1. All-time, UConn leads the series 60-22-1, and has won two of the last three contests at Friedman Diamond between the two teams. NU heads to Long Island to face Stony Brook in CAA weekend two, coming off of back to back series victories over the Seawolves in 2023 and 2024. It'll be the third CAA series between the two programs, and sixth meeting in conference play overall as both teams met in America East league play in the 2000s. Northeastern holds a 19-9 record against Stony Brook, sweeping last season's series at Friedman, and winning the 2023 series 2-1 at Joe Nathan Field.
