The Northeastern volleyball team lost to Stony Brook 3-2 on Friday night at Solomon Court. After winning the first two games, the Huskies lost momentum to the Seawolves and the next three games. NU falls to 8-13 on the season, 1-1 in America East action, while Stony Brook improves to 15-8 overall, 1-1 in league play.
The Seawolves were paced by LaToya Byerly's 22 kills, while NU's Lindsay Wagner had 21 kills and Rebecca Holland tallied 13 kills and 13 digs.
The Huskies simply dominated the first game as they defeated the Seawolves 30-12. NU got out to an early 4-0 lead and never looked back as they cruised to the opening-game win. Stony Brook managed just six kills in game one and hit -.030, compared to NU's 19 kills and .405 hitting percentage.
It appeared the Huskies were going to roll to an easy victory in game two as they got out to an 8-3 lead. Stony Brook responded and kept battling back until the Seawolves took the lead at 25-24, their first edge of the match. With his team down 27-26, NU head coach Ken Nichols took a strategic timeout to rally the troops and the Huskies responded. NU closed out the game on a 4-0 run to win game two 30-27.
Continuing the theme of the first two games, Northeastern once again jumped out to an early lead in game three, staking a 5-1 advantage. Stony Brook rattled off a 5-1 run of its own to even the score at 6-6. With the match tied at 13 apiece, the Seawolves then went on a 6-1 run to push their lead to 19-14. Stony Brook sustained their lead for the remainder of the game, winning 30-24.
Having taken over the match's momentum with their game three win, the Seawolves took an early 5-2 lead and never looked back. Of the many Stony Brook highlights in game four, Julie Zub recorded back-to-back aces to give her team a commanding 27-15 lead. NU managed to hang tough and cut the Stony Brook lead to five, 29-24, when Seawolves head coach Deb Matejka called a timeout to stop the mini-run by NU. The 'Wolves eventually closed out the game 30-26 to tie the match at two games apiece.
In the fifth and deciding game, Stony Brook got out to an early lead at 7-4 before Nichols called a timeout. NU responded yet again as the Huskies forced the Seawolves to think things over at 11-9 with a timeout of their own. Stony Brook came out strong after the timeout and took the final game 15-11.
Without their starting libero, Kelly Cognac, Nichols started Sara Bill as the defensive specialist. Prior to the fifth game, Nichols substituted Holland in at libero looking for a solution to the momentum gained by Stony Brook. Cognac is sidelined with a leg injury and is out indefinitely.
Northeastern next hosts America East opponent Hartford on Saturday afternoon at Solomon at 4 p.m.
