Northeastern 4, Vermont 0

Northeastern cruised to its 10th straight America East victory, as the 10th-ranked Huskies rolled past visiting Vermont, 4-0, on a rain-soaked Sweeney Field.

NU, which improved to 11-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference, received two goals from sophomore Mari Creatini and a goal and two assists from senior Maureen Connelly. The Catamounts fell to 4-10 and 1-2.

"It was a good win," said Husky coach Cheryl Murtagh. "It was an America East game and we had a shutout. We'll take it."

Northeastern executed well in both ends. The defense kept Vermont out of the Husky end, while the offense pressured and put points on the board.

Creatini put NU up for good at the 13:15 mark of the first half. She took a pass from Connelly at the post and slid the ball under UVM goalie Holly Colberg. Less than three minutes later, Connelly lifted a rebound over the outstretched body of Colberg and into the upper corner of the net to give the Huskies a 2-0 halftime lead.

Meanwhile, NU's Alli Bolster Laura Edelmeier, Melissa Rowell, and Fior Arrindell played stifling defense. The Huskies recorded their seventh shutout of the season, this time without even facing a shot on net.

"Our offense played much better," Murtagh said. "We got back to our ball control, passing game and it was effective. Our defense was tight and did some good things. Overall it was a nice game at both ends."

In the second half, Creatini and Connelly connected again, on almost an identical play as their first period goal. Connelly drew defenders toward her at the top of the circle, then she slid the ball to Creatini in the low post, who deposited the ball in the net. Creatini leads the team in scoring with nine goals and six assists.

Sara Webber put the finishing touches on the victory. With 20:35 left in regulation, Webber was denied by Colberg on a breakaway attempt, but calmly collected the rebound and beat Colberg to the far post to give the Huskies a 4-0 lead.

NU outshot UVM 20-4 and held a 17-4 penalty corner advantage.
