In a rematch of last season's America East semifinal, the Northeastern volleyball team defeated New Hampshire 3-2 at Solomon Court. Northeastern improves to 8-12 overall and 1-0 in league action, while New Hampshire falls to 10-10 on the season and 0-1 in conference play.
This week's America East Player of the Week, Alyson Coler of UNH, and Rookie of the Week, Larissa Adomat of NU, proved why they garnered such honors in this grueling five-game match. Coler was New Hampshire's offense as she tallied a school-record 38 kills on 81 attacks, also a record, with 10 errors for a .346 hitting percentage and added 17 digs. Adomat led the NU assault with 23 kills.
Other contributors for Northeastern were Lindsay Wagner (16 kills - 17 digs), Erin Spangler (13 kills - 10 total blocks), Rebecca Holland (12 kills - 16 digs) and Kristin Ursillo (63 assists - 10 digs). UNH's setter Erin Ludwig posted an impressive 72 assists and 13 digs for the Wildcats.
Northeastern looked out of steam following the second game in which the Wildcats won, giving them a 2-0 lead over NU. The Huskies showed their 2001 America East championship form as they never gave up and battled all the way back to pull out the victory in the conference opener for both teams.
Game number one was a hotly contested battle. Northeastern came out of the gate strong with a 5-1 lead and later pushed its advantage to 21-16. New Hampshire responded with a 7-1 run to take the lead at 23-22. UNH pushed its lead to four at 29-25 before closing out the match with a 30-27 victory. Coler led UNH with five kills, while NU was paced by Adomat's four kills.
NU got out to an early 5-0 lead over the Wildcats in game two before they tied the score at 14-14. The Huskies and 'Cats then traded points until UNH took a 22-20 lead. With New Hampshire leading 25-22, NU took a timeout to regroup. It was too late, however, as UNH was too much for the Huskies and took game two 30-27. Coler continued her dominance in as she tallied 10 kills, upping her match total to 15. Adomat again led NU with six kills.
In game three, NU once again got out to an early lead, 9-2, and the Huskies were in control most of the game. UNH challenged and cut the lead to three at 22-19, but would get no closer. The Huskies rolled to a 30-23 victory. Coler added to her total with seven kills, while Erin Spangler tallied five kills.
Game four was back and forth from start to finish with neither team able to post more than a four-point lead. NU would eventually take the game 30-26 to even the five-game match at two games apiece. Coler's 11 kills led UNH, while Adomat posted eight of her own.
The fifth and decisive game also went down to the wire as NU pulled out a dramatic 15-13 win. Trailing 12-9, Northeastern went on a 6-1 run to come away with the victory.
Prior to the match Northeastern captains Spangler, Ursillo and Lindsay Wagner presented NU head coach Ken Nichols with a plaque and the game ball from his 100th career win on Sept. 29 versus St. Peter's 3-0.
Next up for Northeastern is America East foe Stony Brook on Friday night at 7 p.m., followed by Hartford on Saturday at 4 p.m. Both matches are at NU's Solomon Court in Boston.
