Northeastern 3, Maine 0

The Northeastern volleyball team closed out its 2002 regular season with a 3-0 victory over America East foe Maine at Solomon Court. NU won 30-20, 30-17 and 30-23.

NU honored four seniors playing in the final match of their careers at Solomon Court. Over the past four years, seniors Kelly Cognac, Jennifer Endres, Erin Spangler and Lindsay Wagner have all played integral roles in making the Northeastern volleyball program one of the best in the Northeast.

Cognac is the team's top defensive specialist and currently leads America East in digs per game (4.06), while Spangler (2.88 kills, 1.24 digs and 1.13 blocks per game) and Wagner (3.36 kills, 2.67 digs and 0.42 service aces per game) have been anchors of the NU offense. Unfortunately for Endres, she suffered a serious ankle injury on Sept. 29 against St. Peter's and has played just two matches since.

Leading the way for NU was Wagner with a game-high 20 kills on 34 attacks with just two errors (.529 hitting percentage), while freshman Larissa Adomat added 11 kills. NU outhit Maine .286 to .190.

The Huskies defeated the Black Bears in game one 30-20. Wagner led NU with seven kills, while Adomat posted six. Northeastern jumped out to an early 15-11 lead and never looked back. Maine called two timeouts to try to stop the Husky attack, but it was too late.

NU once again got out to an early advantage, 11-5, in the second game, forcing Maine to talk things over. The Huskies came out of the timeout and pushed their lead to 20-11 before taking the game 30-17.

The third and final game of the match was hard-fought throughout. Northeastern managed to pull away with a 22-16 edge and took the last game 30-23.

Next up for Northeastern is the America East Championship on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 23-24, at New Hampshire's Lundholm Gymnasium in Durham. The Huskies have locked up the #2 seed as they will try to defend their league crown on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. NU will play the #3 seed, which has yet to be determined, with the winner going on to the final on Sunday at 1 p.m. Last season, Northeastern defeated UNH 3-1 in the semis before sweeping Maine 3-0 in the final to win its first-ever conference championship and NCAA berth.
