The seventh-ranked Huskies were upended, 2-1, in overtime by the Connecticut in their final regular season game Tuesday afternoon in Storrs. NU ended the regular season with an impressive 15-4 record, while UConn improved to 13-7.
The match pitted the America East Conference regular-season champion against the Big East Conference regular-season champion. Both teams were trying to capitalize on the make-up game to ready themselves for their conference tournaments this weekend.
Northeastern struck first with a goal by sophomore Liane Dixon in the 30th minute of play to give the Huskies a 1-0 advantage heading into the break. The goal was Dixon's 15th of the season and put her over the 30-point mark for the first time in her career (15 goals, one assist).
UConn came out with more intensity in the second half and pushed through a score off a corner 15 minutes into the second half. NU senior Emily Roy made a tough save, but Lauren Christie was there for the rebound to knot the game at 1.
With UConn continuing to pressure and the NU defense having a tough time keeping the ball out of its end, Roy stopped four shots to keep Northeastern in striking range.
However, in overtime, UConn's Mary Jo Malche found an opening to end the game in the 81st minute.
NU was previously 11-1 when leading at the half, and three of its four losses have come in overtime.
