Northeastern lost to Utah State 3-0 in the opening match of the 2002 Rhode Island Classic at Keaney Gym in Kingston, R.I. on Friday.
Junior middle blocker Erin Cartwright posted a team-high 17 kills as the Aggies won games by the score of 30-22, 30-21 and 30-25. Utah State has now won its last three matches to improve to 4-3 on the season, while Northeastern fell to 3-4 with its fourth straight loss.
Utah State opened the match by hitting .351 in the first game with 18 kills, while NU hit .152 with 11 kills. In game two, USU hit a blistering .559 with 20 kills and only one attack error, while limiting the Huskies to a .135 hitting percentage. The third and final game of the match saw the Aggies hit .474 with 22 kills as compared to 14 kills and a .233 hitting percentage for Northeastern. For the match, Utah State hit a season-high .463 (60-10-108) and held Northeastern to a .170 (39-22-100) hitting percentage.
Erin Spangler and Lindsay Wagner led the Huskies with nine kills apiece, while freshman Larissa Adomat added eight kills. Briana Furch had five kills in 10 attacks without an error for a hitting percentage of .500.
NU returns to action with two more matches at the Rhode Island Classic on Saturday, taking on Baylor at 12:30 p.m. and then host Rhode Island at 7 p.m.
