Northeastern Huskies

Field Hockey

Northeastern 3, Central Michigan 1

Sophomore Liane Dixon fired in two first-half goals and the stingy Northeastern defense took care of the rest, as the 12th-ranked Huskies downed Central Michigan, 3-1, in torrential downpours at Ocker Field in Ann Arbor, Mich., Friday afternoon.

Already off to the best start in Northeastern field hockey history, the Huskies improved to 6-0 on the year, setting up a showdown with third-ranked Michigan (5-1) on Sunday (2 p.m.).

"The team worked really hard and managed to take control in the second half," said NU coach Cheryl Murtagh. "We had a little trouble with the field, but adapted well to the conditions and even managed to create a goal in the second half."

Dixon scored the first goal of the contest in the 11th minute after receiving a pass from senior Sarah Broderick in the post and tipping it in. The Huskies are now 6-0 when scoring first.

The Chippewas evened the game 10 minutes later when Katie Coccia tipped the ball past NU's Emily Roy (4 saves). Dixon answered less than four minutes later, converting a one-on-one breakaway against CMU keeper Janet Spero (6 saves).

After a couple of game stoppages due to the inclement weather, the Huskies managed to settle down and control play. And, with just over 10 minutes remaining, senior Fior Arrindell blasted a shot straight through the CMU defense and past the goalie from 15 yards out to put the game out of reach.
