In a match that lasted almost two and a half hours, Valparaiso held on to defeat Northeastern (25-30, 30-19, 30-26, 28-30, 18-16) on the first night of the Crusader Classic.
Erin Spangler led the Huskies with 16 kills, and Kelly Cognac had 33 digs. Spangler hit a team-high .282 with the 16 kills coming against five errors in 39 attempts.
Michelle Robinson led the Crusaders with 18 kills and Elissa Malthaner added 17. Marion Hansen led the team with 23 digs. Cyndi Norman had 52 assists in the game.
The teams traded games the entire match, leading up to a memorable fifth game. The Crusaders jumped out to a quick 3-0 edge, but NU rallied and stayed with Valpo point for points. The Crusaders went up 14-13, but the Huskies staved off the loss and rallied for a match point, going ahead 15-14. Valpo tied it up, but again NU earned a match point with a 16-15 lead. The Crusaders then scored the final three points of the match and recorded the win when Spangler's blast went wide.
NU will play two games on Saturday at Valpo, meeting Buffalo in the early afternoon before taking on Jacksonville.
