Women's Volleyball

Northeastern 3, St. Peter's 0

Northeastern volleyball head coach Ken Nichols won his 100th career match on Sunday afternoon as the Huskies swept St. Peter's 3-0 at Solomon Court. NU snapped a five-match losing streak and improved to 5-10 on the season, while the Peahens fell to 1-11 overall.

The milestone for Nichols is the latest in a career full of highlights. He was named 1999 Big East Coach of the Year while at Providence and 2000 America East Coach of the Year in his first season at NU. As coach of the Friars, Nichols tallied a record of 53-40 in three seasons and is currently 47-37 at Northeastern. Last season Nichols also led the Huskies to the America East Championship and their first-ever berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Northeastern cured its hitting slump of late as they tallied a .320 hitting percentage, far better then SPC's .106. After getting off to a slow start in game one, the Huskies improved as the match progressed.

Leading the way for NU was Erin Spangler, who recorded 16 kills on 21 attempts with zero errors for an impressive .762 hitting percentage. Freshman Larissa Adomat added 13 kills, while Rebecca Holland chipped in with 10. Defensively, libero Kelly Cognac had 14 digs as did Holland, to give her a double-double. NU setter Kristin Ursillo had the Huskies' other double-double with 41 assists and 11 digs.

SPC was led by Tzvetomila Dotcheva's 12 kills and 13 digs.

The first game was a hard-fought battle as the Huskies squeezed out a 30-28 win. Spangler was nearly perfect for NU as she tallied eight kills with no errors on nine attacks for a hitting percentage of .889. As a team, NU was outhit .214 to .184 by the Peahens.

It was all Northeastern in game two as the Huskies cruised to a 30-19 victory. Adomat led NU with five kills and Spangler remained nearly flawless with four kills and zero errors on seven attempts for a .571 hitting percentage. Freshman Lindsay Feller saw her first action at Solomon Court in game two as she recorded one kill and a service ace.

Game three was dominated by the Huskies as they were victorious 30-11.

Next up for Northeastern is non-conference foe Holy Cross on Tuesday in Worcester at 7 p.m., followed by the Crimson Classic at Harvard.
