The Northeastern University volleyball team is 0-1 to start the 2006 season after losing to Arizona State in straight games, 24-30, 26-30 and 21-30, on Friday night in Tempe, Ariz. The Huskies had a tough time at the net as they were outhit 52 to 37 in kills and had six fewer blocks than the Sun Devils. Four huskies recorded double-digit dig totals but their back row defense wasn't enough to slow down ASU's hitting attack.
Sophomore Lauren DeTurk led the Huskies with a team high nine kills. Senior co-captain Ashley Reeves and sophomore hitter Brianna Seitz added seven kills each.
Ivana Pavlison was the Huskies' assist leader as the senior setter finished with seven assists and two kills. Freshman setter Jessica Tkachuk opened her NU career with a six assist, ten dig performance.
Sun Devil sophomore Margie Giordano had a match-high 16 kills on .424 attacking percentage at outside hitter and senior hitter Nicole Morton's 11 kills were second most in the match. ASU setters, Marina Mercer and Rachel Mittelstaedt, combined for 46 assists in the match. NU tallied 32 assists total, coming from ten different players with no Husky having more than seven.
The Huskies will continue their west coast run with a doubleheader on Saturday, August 26. They play Loyola Marymount at 1 p.m. and Utah Valley State at 8 p.m.
