The volleyball team suffered a narrow defeat to Hofstra Saturday afternoon, 3-2 (29-31, 30-24, 30-26, 34-36, 12-15) in Hempstead, N.Y. The Huskies had a chance to close out the match in the fourth game, but fell in the marathon game. Kira Batura and Lauren DeTurk were among five Huskies with double-digit kills with 14 each, while Jessica Tkachuk had 34 assists. Northeastern returns to the court Friday when they take on William & Mary.
The first game, much like the entire match was closely contested as Northeastern held a 22-18 advantage, but the Pride were able to rally, eventually taking a 29-28 lead. After a kill by Batura knotted the score at 29-29, the Pride scored two straight points to take the opening game.
Undeterred, Northeastern rallied to take the next two games, as Brianna Seitz recorded three kills in game two, and Batura and DeTurk each had four kills in game three to lead in the way.
With the Huskies in position to win the match in game four, the teams staged a back-and-forth battle, with neither squad holding more than a three-point lead. Trailing 25-27, three straight points by the Huskies, a kill by Batura and two errors by the Pride, gave the visitors a 28-27 advantage. After a Hofstra point, a kill by DeTurk gave the Huskies match point, but they were unable to convert after an error.
As the game went on, Northeastern staved off five game points. With the score tied at 34-34, Hofstra finally put the game away with two consecutive points.
In game five, Hofstra staked themselves to an early three point lead at 7-4, and Northeastern was never able to recover, falling behind by as much as 14-9.
Britney Brown with 13 kills, and Caitlin Tittl and Seitz with 11 kills were the other three Huskies to record double-digits. The Huskies also had 10 blocks as a team.
