The volleyball team swept George Mason 3-0 on Saturday. NU was without setter Britney Brown, but the team rallied together earning its seventh straight victory. Captain Lauren DeTurk posted another double-double with a match-high16 kills with a hit percentage of .393 and 11 digs. Jessica Tkachuk had a match-high 40 assist and also recorded eight digs. Sophomore Caitlin Tittl had a solid match with six kills and a match-high five blocks. The Huskies are now 9-7 overall and 3-0 in the CAA.
The first set consisted of hard fought volleyball. George Mason scored first in the set and took an early lead. The Patriots went on a 3-0 run to create some separation from Northeastern. The Huskies rallied back with a 4-0 run of their own to tie the set at nine. GMU would then go on an 8-0 run taking a 17-9 lead over the Huskies. But NU would not go down without a fight. The team's 14 kills and six blocks brought NU together as they came back from behind to win the first set 27-25.
The Huskies would carry over the momentum to the second set, as they started off with a 5-0 run. The Patriots never led in the set and were only to come close as within three to the Huskies. Northeastern was too strong for George Mason, who was only to get five kills and have a .000 hit percentage in the set. Jessica Tkachuk's 13 assist and Jillian Robinson's four kills helped NU cruise to victory by a score of 25-13.
In the third set, GMU had a quick start. The Patriots took an early 3-1 lead. But Lauren DeTurk, who had seven kills in the set, would not let that lead last for long. NU went on a 4-0 run to take a 6-3 lead. George Mason was able to bring the lead down to one, but Northeastern went on a 5-0 run making the set 15-10 in favor of NU. But the Patriots would not go away fighting to stay alive in the set and the match. GMU tied the set at 23 all but two kills by DeTurk led to another Husky victory.
Northeastern is back in action Friday Oct. 10 when the team travels to Richmond, Va. to battle CAA opponent Va. Commonwealth at 7 p.m.
