Huskies fall to James Madison in double overtime

Box score

The Northeastern Huskies (9-9, 3-4 CAA) lost a heartbreaker on Sunday at the hands of No. 11 James Madison, 3-2 in double overtime at Sweeney Field. Freshman Tori Lindsay scored the game-winner at the 93:14 mark, lifting a rebound over Husky keeper Lizzie Priest off a penalty corner. Sophomore Carolyn Malloy and freshman Allie Conti scored for the Huskies, who were eliminated from CAA postseason contention.

The Huskies controlled the majority of the play and took a late 2-1 lead courtesy of Malloy's 10th goal of the year at 47:25. Malloy was able to finagle the ball around JMU keeper Kelsey Cutchins, who had come out of the net to try to kick away a loose ball. Cutchins nearly dispossed Malloy, but the Huskies' sophomore was able to collect the ball behind the JMU keeper and tap it into the empty cage.

Northeastern held the advantage for 14 minutes before James Madison evened the scoreline with 8:44 remaining in the second frame. Junior Dolores de Rooij's blast from the right wing deflected off the post and snuck across the goal line. It was de Rooij's second of the game, as she was also responsible for the Dukes' first goal at 16:41 of the first half.

Conti registered her first collegiate goal at 29:58, answering de Rooij's opener to tie the score at one before halftime. Freshman Crystal Poland provided the assist with a cross from the right wing that Conti redirected home.

Priest played a phenomenal game in net for Northeastern, making several key saves in the second half and in the overtime periods. With 12 minutes remaining in the second half, Priest stoned senior Tara King off a penalty corner, kicking aside a low line drive. The North Vancouver native then made an acrobatic stop on senior Meghan Bain, keying in on a redirection from point-blank range. Priest then sprawled out to eat up a shot by junior Becky Hilgar in the first overtime to preserve the tie.

James Madison sophomore Lindsay Cutchins nearly won the game four minutes into the second overtime, but her attempt from 10 yards out skipped just wide of the left post. Only five minutes later, however, the Dukes did find the net for the deciding goal. Priest made the initial save on de Rooij off a penalty corner, but the rebound popped right out to Lindsay, who scooped it over the fallen keeper for the win.

Northeastern outshot James Madison by a 20-16 margin, however the Dukes held a 7-2 edge in the overtime periods.

With the win, James Madison clinched the three spot in the CAA and a date with Delaware next weekend at the CAA Championship. Drexel locked up the conference's top spot by virtue of a 4-2 win over the Fightin' Blue Hens on Sunday and will host Hofstra in the other CAA playoff game.
