Junior
Wade MacLeod extended his point streak to six games by recording a goal and an assist in a 9-2 loss at Vermont on Saturday night. MacLeod logged his 19th-career multi-point game and has tallied eight points in the last six outings.
Senior defensman
Jim Driscoll lit the lamp for the second time this season while junior
Steve Silva and newcomer
Drew Ellement secured their fifth and fourth helpers, respectively.
Right from the get-go, the Catamounts found a seam through NU's defense and crafted a great chance, but junior
Mike Hewkin endured a hooking call at 1:08 to disrupt the play. On UVM's first cycle with the extra skater, Brayden Irwin chipped a loose puck over NU rookie netminder
Chris Rawlings' left pad for the quick 1-0 lead at 1:35.
Vermont doubled its advantage at 7:19 on a quick wrist shot from Sebastian Stalberg in the near slot. Kyle Medvec linked up with Stalberg from the corner, providing an unattested chance for the 2-0 cushion.
At the start of the second, the Catamounts grabbed a three-goal lead at 00:48. Vermont controlled the puck from the drop as Brian Roloff kicked it back to Dan Lawson at the right point. Lawson let a slap shot go, but Jack Downing's redirection in front of the net baffled Rawlings for the 3-0 advantage.
Driscoll stopped the bleeding at 10:56 to cut Vermont's lead to two, 3-1. MacLeod executed the forecheck perfectly behind UVM's net and stripped the puck. As he was falling to his knees, MacLeod whirled the puck out to the point where Driscoll streaked in and teed up a ripper. Driscoll's blast deflected off of a Catamounts' blade and over UVM goaltender Rob Madore's glove.
Justin Milo recouped the three-goal edge at 14:08 by potting a turnover in Northeastern's zone, 4-1.
Towards the latter part of the second session, Vermont added three more tallies in under a four-minute span from the lumber of Roloff (15:40), Tobias Nilsson-Roos (18:05) and Milo (19:03).
Head coach Greg Cronin opted for freshman
Bryan Mountain following Roloff's goal as the Catamounts hit the five-goal mark. Mountain surrendered two tallies and made three saves in the remaining 4:20 of the second period. Rawlings returned to staff the net to start the third.
Irwin added his second of the night on a one-time pass from Milo at 5:42 of the third, but MacLeod answered at 7:01 of the third frame. Ellement pilfered the puck in UVM's zone and slid it to Silva on the far corner. Silva hooked up with MacLeod in-stride in front of Madore to move the score to 8-2.
Irwin capped a hat trick and the final count at 12:06 with a slap shot in the slot for Vermont's ninth marker of the game.
The last time Northeastern gave up nine goals was at New Hampshire on Nov. 2, 1996.
Rawlings made 12 stops in the loss while Madore turned away 24 attempts. Northeastern outshot the Catamounts, 27-24.
The Huskies entertain Providence in a rare Tuesday night bout at Matthews Arena on Jan. 19. Northeastern has not played a Tuesday night game since the Huskies and Friars last met on Nov. 14, 2006 in a 3-3 tie. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
