Northeastern dropped game one of Saturday's afternoon doubleheader to VCU, 6-5. Freshman catcher Jon Leroux led the Huskies offensively, batting 3-for-4 with a run score and an RBI. Sophomore Matt Miller added two hits, and senior David Gustafson batted 2-for-3 with a walk and a home run in his first game in the line up since the season opener.

Starting pitcher Les Williams threw six innings, allowing five runs on 11 hits without issuing any free passes. He was relieved in the seventh by Charly Bashara, who took the loss despite allowing just one unearned run.

NU assembled a 4-0 lead before VCU could get on the board. Brendan Stokes led off the second inning with a double and later came home on Leroux's RBI single. In the third inning, Miller and Alan Pastyrnak led off the inning by getting on first and second, moved up a base on Frank Compagnone's ground out, and scored on Tony DiCesare's single to right.

The Huskies tacked on their fourth run in the fourth inning on Gustafson's lead-off bomb to left field.

VCU struck back in the bottom of the frame, scoring four runs to knot up the score.

NU took a brief 5-4 lead in the sixth, capitalizing on a Leroux single and a wild pitch that moved him into scoring position. Ryan Maguire singled to right field to bring Leroux home.

But VCU tied the game up in the bottom of the sixth on a single, a stolen base and an RBI single to left.

Both teams were scoreless until VCU walked off with a win in the bottom of the ninth. A crucial error by Bashara moved two runners into scoring position, and a single to right field ended the game with VCU on top 6-5.

NU had four extra-base hits in the game, including Gustafson's home run (just the second that the Huskies have hit all year) and doubles from DiCesare, Leroux and Stokes.

Game two of the doubleheader immediately followed this game.
