The Huskies pounded out 17 hits, including two home runs, but a three-run home run from Hofstra's Matt Prokopowicz in the 12th inning was the final blow in a 9-6 loss for NU. The Huskies had a 5-1 lead in the fourth inning, but an offensive surge from Hofstra in the last few frames forced extras. Both teams scored in the 11th, but the Pride's three-run 12th sealed NU's fate.
Tony DiCesare hit a RBI triple in the bottom of the 11th with two outs and two strikes to extend the game. DiCesare also smashed a solo home run, his second of the season, en route to a 3-for-5 day.
Matt Miller batted 2-for-6 and hit his first home run of the season.
David Gustafson hit two doubles, scored a run and logged two RBI. One of his doubles involved a throwing error that allowed him to score, giving Gustafson a circus-type inside-the-park home run.
The Huskies opened the game with a run in the first inning using a single from Miller, a stolen base, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead. Hofstra immediately tied the score in the second at 1-1.
NU scored again in the third on DiCesare's bomb off the top of the press box in right field, and added three more in the fourth. Gustfson's double-turned home run brought in two, and Miller's shot into the right field bleachers put Northeastern up 5-1.
The Huskies' bats cooled off, though, and couldn't add to the lead any more. Hofstra scored one in the sixth, one in the eighth and two in the ninth to even the score and send the game into extra innings.
It took quite a rally in the ninth inning to get Hofstra back into the game. The Pride hit four singles and used a smart combination of sacrifices and good base running to score two runs.
Both teams were scoreless in the 10th, though not for lack of effort. Northeastern had the winning run in scoring position, but couldn't get the job done, sending the game into the 11th.
Hofstra struck first, capitalizing on two Husky errors to break the tie and take a 6-5 lead.
But Northeastern stormed back, mounting a two-out rally.
Alan Pastyrnak hit a sharp ball off the pitcher that left him scrambling for the ball, and Pastyrnak legged out a single. Then, with two strikes, DiCesare blasted a one-hopper off the wall in center field to score Pastyrnak and put the winning run just 90 feet away.
However, a ground out ended the inning, sending the game into a 12th inning.
Hofstra got runners on with a single and a walk, and Prokopowicz' two-out smash put the Pride up 9-6. Northeastern's 12th looked promising, starting with a walk, but a strikeout and a double play wrapped the game up for Hofstra.
Starting pitcher
Andrew Leenhouts pitched well, allowing just two runs through six innings. He was relieved by
Charly Bashara, who allowed three runs in 2 1/3 innings, and
Dan Zehr, who entered in the ninth, looking to close the game out, ended up finishing the last 3 2/3 innings. He allowed four runs, three of which came earned.
The teams' three game series wraps up tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Friedman Diamond. Junior lefty
JT Ross will get his first start in CAA play this season. Live stats, video and audio will be available at game time.
