Northeastern had two four-run leads, but Delaware fought back to break a 6-6 tie in the ninth and take a 7-6 victory over the Huskies in Newark, Del. The loss spoiled NU's big day with the bats, particularly that of
Devin Barry, who went 3-for-4 with his first collegiate home run.
Frank Compagnone also homered for the third time this season, the most among Huskies in 2010.
It was also a bittersweet afternoon for senior
Tony DiCesare, whose fifth inning triple was the 14th of his career. He now has the most career triples in Northeastern history.
Starter
Les Williams allowed six runs in six innings. He induced 12 flyouts, but gave up three home runs in the process, including two to Delaware's Carlos Alonzo.
Reliever
Chris Carmain tossed the last 2-2/3 innings, giving up one run (unearned) on just one hit. He has now gone 9-1/3 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run.
Delaware jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead on Alonzo's first home run to lead off the bottom of the first. But NU struck back in the second, taking a 2-1 lead on Barry's homer to left field. He drove in
John Puttress, who doubled with two outs in the previous at bat.
NU didn't let up, extending its lead to 5-1 by adding three runs in the third.
Matt Miller hit a single to lead off the inning, moved to second on a walk from
David Gustafson and scampered to third on a wild pitch. DiCesare grounded out, plating Miller and moving Gustafson to third. Compagnone then deposited his home run over the wall in left center, bringing in Gustafson and giving NU its first four run lead.
Delaware got another solo home run in the fourth to make the score 5-2, but DiCesare and the Huskies pushed it back out to four in their next ups.
DiCesare clubbed a one-out triple to left center and scored when
Brendan Stokes legged out an infield single two batters later. It was one of the last highlights for the Huskies, as they managed just three singles in the last four innings.
Delaware took advantage of the offensive lapse, scoring five unanswered runs. One run in the fifth and three in the sixth squared the score at 6-6, and the bullpens battled it out for the final three innings.
Things didn't look good from the start in the ninth inning, as Carmain plunked the leadoff man. A single to right field put the runners at first and second with no outs. A fielder's choice eliminated the lead runner, giving the Blue Hens men at first and second again with one out. Carmain thengot a ground ball to shortstop, giving NU the chance to turn two. But a throwing error on the relay end of the double play allowed the runner from second to score, ending the game at 7-6.
The Huskies tallied 12 total hits on the day.
Ryan Maguire logged two singles for his second consecutive two-hit game. Barry and Compagnone each had two RBI, and six different players crossed the plate.
The Huskies and Blue Hens will be back at it again tomorrow in a 1 p.m. showdown. NU will send
Charly Bashara to the mound in hopes of evening the series. Live stats will be available at game time.
