Whitney Shean recorded six points, including the game-winning goal, as the Northeastern field hockey team won at Providence, 5-2, on Sunday.
Ashley Webber got the offense started at 3:15, when Shean set her up for her third goal of the season to give the Huskies the early lead. The Friars were able to get that one back 20 minutes later when Abby Maguire took a shot off a rebound that found the back of the net to tie the score at 1-1 at 23:14.
The score remained deadlocked through halftime, but the Husky offense stepped it up early in the second half. Sarah Eckhoff scored on a penalty corner at 37:59 to give the Huskies a lead they would never relinquish.
Shean scored the game-winning goal at 43:46 by tipping in Lauren Edelmeier's shot from a penalty corner. Shean then provided some insurance four minutes later by knocking in a rebound at 47:47 to give Northeastern the 4-1 lead.
The Friars mustered one more goal from Liz Cherry at 52:29, but the Huskies got that one back when Rachel Wilkes scored from the right side at 58:45
While the Husky offense was in high gear, the Northeastern defense stifled Providence throughout the game as the Huskies outshot the Friars, 35-4.
The win gives the Huskies a 2-0 mark for their week. Northeastern next takes the field on Saturday at Holy Cross at noon. The Huskies return home to Parsons Field to face cross-town rival Boston University on Fri., Sept. 16 at 2:30 p.m.
