No. 15 Colorado State proved to be too much for Northeastern to handle, as the Huskies fell, 3-0, to the Rams on Saturday. The Huskies move to 5-4 on the season and have one game remaining in the Rams Volleyball Classic in Fort Collins, Colo.
Northeastern and Colorado State engaged in a back and forth battle early in the first set. With the score tied at 9-9, the Rams began to distance themselves from the Huskies. Northeastern closed the gap to within two points, trailing Colorado State 19-17, but the Rams then went on a 6-2 run to close the set and claim a 25-19 victory over the Huskies.
The Rams won the second set, 25-22, but the Huskies did not go down without a fight. Northeastern trailed Colorado State, 6-3, but tallied five-straight points behind the serving of senior Helene Servillon to take an 8-6 lead and force the Rams to use a timeout. Following the break, there were several lead changes before the set was tied at 20-20. Two attack errors by Northeastern gave Colorado State a 22-20 lead before Northeastern called a timeout in attempt to regroup. However, the Huskies were unable to overcome the Rams and fell 25-22.
The Rams held a 10-3 lead early in the third set, but a 6-0 rally by the Huskies cut the lead to one at 11-10. Colorado State attempted to pull away, but Northeastern would not back down and trailed by three points, 20-17, before a timeout was called. The Huskies would then bring it to within two, down 23-21, but were not able to finish off the Rams. Colorado State won the set, 25-21.
Senior Britney Brown once again led the way for the Huskies with a double-double, posting a team-high 15 kills and 19 assists. Freshman Ina Kamenova contributed 12 assists and eight digs.
Sophomore Nicole Bishop and freshman Kelly Bacon tied for second on the team with six kills each. Senior Jillian Robinson added five kills while classmate Jessica LaScola contributed a team-high 11 digs for the Huskies.
Northeastern concludes its play in the Rams Volleyball Classic at 6:30 p.m. (EDT) Saturday with a match against Texas Tech.
