Crystal Poland scored her 21st goal of the season on a penalty corner midway through the second overtime period to lift Northeastern to a thrilling 2-1 victory over No. 11 Boston College on Friday at Sweeney Field. The win is the Huskies fifth in a row and sixth at home in as many games.
The crosstown rivals waged a defensive battle in the first half, playing to a scoreless tie. Northeastern (10-5) tallied seven shots, with two shots on goal, to Boston College's (8-6) five shots, with no shots on goal. Both teams drew four corners in the period.
After the break, Northeastern wasted little time going on the offensive. Senior
Annie Clayman scored her third goal of the season just 1:10 into the second half to give the Huskies the 1-0 lead. Clayman tipped in a ball on the right side of the cage from
Kaela Barker. The assist was Barker's fourth on the year.
Boston College appeared to tie the game just six minutes later on a shot off a penalty corner, but the shot was deemed lifted and was disallowed.
The Eagles finally found the equalizer at the 50:49 mark. Emma Plasteras buried a shot from close range on the left side of the cage off a pass from Anna Wetherall.
Boston College continued to apply pressure. The Eagles fired a shot passed NU's
Lizzie Priest off another penalty corner. But again, a BC player lifted the ball and the shot was disallowed.
Northeastern gained momentum down the stretch with a series of scoring opportunities. The first was on an impressive shot by
Lindsay Bennett that sailed just high of the cage. Poland was next, when she took possession in the defensive half with 7:00 left and lined up a would-be go-ahead chance on BC keeper Nicole Barry. Barry made a diving save to fend off the Poland laser. The Huskies drew a corner at the end of regulation but were stymied by the BC defense.
In the period, Northeastern outshot BC, 8-5, and registered more scoring opportunities, 5-4.
BC played the aggressor in the first overtime period and forced a majority of the play in its offensive zone. The Eagles held a slight edge in shots, 4-3.
Northeastern turned the tables in the second overtime. The Huskies registered the only two shots in the period—the second one being Poland's game-winner. On the corner, senior
Carolyn Malloy played the ball to
Nicky Graham who set it for Poland. The assists were the 12th and 11th on the year for Malloy and Graham, respectively.
The Huskies return to CAA play on Friday, when they travel to Hofstra for a 3 p.m. contest.
