Huskies win third in a row with 4-2 triumph over Delaware

Box score

Northeastern defeated CAA foe Delaware, 4-2, on Friday afternoon at Sweeney Field. Nicky Graham tallied three points (one goal and one assist) to power the Huskies. With the win, Northeastern extended its winning streak to three games and remains undefeated at home (4-0) on the season. The Huskies are now 8-5 overall and 3-2 in CAA play. Delaware falls to 6-7 (1-2 CAA).

It took Northeastern little more than a minute to score the game's first goal when Crystal Poland put home a shot off a penalty corner. The Crofton, British Columbia native fired a shot into the left corner of the cage past a diving Noelle Diana. The goal was Poland's 20th of the season. Carolyn Malloy and Graham assisted on the Poland goal.

Delaware evened the game, 1-1, on a penalty corner goal of its own. Kelsey McKee scored her seventh goal of the season, from Carley Hecht and Kayla Schweitzer.

Northeastern converted another penalty corner to regain the lead midway through the first half. Pam Aldridge scored the goal, her fifth of the season, with the assist from Kelly Dunn.

Just over 10 minutes later, the Huskies struck again to extend the lead to two. Lindsay Bennett scored what would prove to be the game-winner on an assist from Kaela Barker. The goal was Bennett's first of the season.

The offensive show of force continued for the Huskies when Graham scored before the close of the half. Graham darted downfield, handled a nice feed and evaded Delaware defenders. She drew keeper Diana away from the cage before burying the shot to give Northeastern a 4-1 halftime cushion.

Delaware started the second half quickly, scoring just over a minute into the half. NU keeper Lizzie Priest made a nice save on a shot by Carley Hecht. The rebound found its way to the Hens' Nicole Onorato, who fired the shot past Priest for the goal, her second of the season.

With the lead cut to two, the Northeastern defense stiffened, and keeper Priest turned aside six second-half Delaware shots to preserve the win.

For the game, Delaware outshot the Huskies, 23-18, and put more shots on goal, 13-11. The Blue Hens also owned the advantage in penalty corners, 8-5. However, Northeastern's Priest won the saves battle, 11-7.

The Huskies return to action on Monday, when they welcome Harvard to Sweeney Field for a noon contest.

NOTES:
Poland's two points continue her torrid scoring pace. She now has 43 points on the season (20 goals, 3 assists). Poland entered Friday's game leading the nation in both goals per game and points per game.

Lindsay Bennett and Nicky Graham both scored their first goals of the season.
