Doyle captures 3K title in NU's fifth-place performance

DAY TWO

The Northeastern men's track & field team concluded the 2011 New England Indoor Championship with a fifth-place team finish on Saturday at Boston University's Track & Tennis Center.

The Huskies finished with 52 points while Connecticut captured its sixth-straight New England title with an aggregate of 119.50 points.

Adding on to Friday's strong showing, the Huskies staked their claim to the 3,000-meter run as rookie Brian Doyle picked up Northeastern's lone victory in the second day of competition. The East Greeenwich, R.I. native turned in a victorious time of 8:27.33 while sophomore Nick Ryan crossed in 8:30.84 for the second-place finish. Second-year harrier Dan Grant closed in on 13th with a time of 8:41.58.

Jonathan Hall and Even Whetsell earned spots in their respective finals of the 500-meter and 800-meter dash with strong qualifying times on Friday.

Hall's efforts of 1:03.07 in the 500-meter dash were good enough for second place. The North Bellmore, N.Y. native's time stands as a season best thus far.

Evan Whetsell also ran for a season best in the 800-meter run with a rapid mark of 1:50.64. Whetsell's times stood for fifth place in the finals.

In the mile, Sebastian Putzeys legged out 14 other runners in the mile for a 12th-place time of 4:17.04.

The 4 x 800-meter team of Eric Jenkins, Andrew Snyder, Whetsell and hall combined for a fourth-place march of 7:41.22 while the 4 x 400-meter quartet finished up in 11th place after crossing in 3:20.90. The 4 x 400-meter squad consisted of Sean Collins, Alex Shapiro, Dylan Lucas and Anthony Gentles.

In the field, sophomore Tejorn Davis put together a combination of 13.59m (44'7) for 10th place. Senior Alex Iannetta along with newcomers Max Milder and James Hall came in 17th, 20th, and 22nd, respectively, after clearing 16.15m, 15.87m and 15.49m in the shot put event.

Next weekend, the IC4A qualifiers will get to display their talent at the same track in Boston, starting on Saturday, March 5.

DAY ONE

The men's track & field team is just seven and a half points back of leading Connecticut, registering 17 points through five scored events at the first day of the 2011 New England Indoor Championship at Boston University's Track & Tennis Center.

The Huskies long jump efforts catapult Northeastern to the top of the leaderboard thanks to a second, third and sixth-performances by a pair of rookies and one veteran.

Senior Andrew Staples captured second place in the long jump with a measure of 7.05m (23'1.75) while newcomer Kaylin Miranda was right on his heels for second place with a leap of 7.01m (23'0). Classmate Jackson MacDonald picked up a couple more points for the Huskies with a sixth-place spring of 6.74m (22'1.5).

Veteran Jonathan Hall put Northeastern in prime position for more points in tomorrow's 500-meter finals after turning in the third-best mark (1:04.47) in a field of 29 competitors. Hall's time marked his second-quickest of the indoor season as the senior will square off against nine others in the final showdown tomorrow.

Junior Evan Whetsell motored his way into the 800-meter finals after crossing the line in 1:52.14. Whetsell outran 19 other student-athletes and will vie for the 800-meter run crown in tomorrow's final.

Senior Brian Daly cleared 4.60m (15'1) for ninth place in the pole vault on Friday while classmate Joe Siravo took to the distance challenge and finished in 27th-place in the 5,000-meter run after a time of 15:28.40.

The men's distance medley quartet consisting of Anthony Gentles, Dan Grant, Luke Malley and Sebastian Putzeys consolidated their efforts and finished in 14th place with a combined time of 10:11.39.
