Box score

On the heels of its 12th-consecutive victorious set, the Northeastern volleyball team captured the St. John's Kaiser Classic tournament with a 3-0 sweep of Brown in the Huskies' final game on Sunday afternoon in Queens, N.Y.

Sophomore outside hitter Janelle Tucker paced the Huskies with 12 kills for the second-straight outing and added seven digs to her line. Senior Lauryn Ciszek turned it up offensively and put away seven kills along with four block assists. Defensively, junior middle hitter Nicole Bishop dominated up front after registering three solo blocks and four assists.

First-year libero Natalia Skiba recorded a match-best 21 digs and slammed down an ace in the victory.

Sophomore Kelly Bacon was named MVP of the tournament while Ciszek and Skiba earned all-tournament honors.

The early portion of the first set was closely contested as both teams battled to a 4-4 count, but Northeastern pulled away with six of the next seven points with Bishop and Tucker leading the way offensively to take a 10-5 edge. The Bears picked up the next two points, but could not overtake Northeastern's lead.

Brown hailed for a timeout as NU carried a 16-11 advantage, but two Bears' attacking errors put the first set in hand for Northeastern. The Huskies built a 23-13 advantage with more help from Brown as Ciszek sealed the deal for the 25-16 win in set one.

Northeastern never trailed in the second set as Tucker's kill to start things off were followed by a sophomore Brianna Hollis ace to set the tempo. The Huskies continued on to a 7-2 edge with sophomore Nichole Kurz and rookie Jillian Briner adding in successful swings.

Emma Pastore's attack closed NU's gap to 9-7, but Northeastern pulled away and mounted an eight-point advantage, 20-12, with a mix of NU offense and Brown attacking errors. Kurz closed the door in the second set with an assist from Briner to push Brown to the brink, 25-19.

After Northeastern raced out to a 4-1 lead in the third frame, Brown notched five of the next six volleys to take a 6-5 edge. Momentum swung back towards Northeastern with a sophomore Ina Kamenova kill, thrusting the Huskies back up top, 14-10. Ciszek's attacking error let Brown back to within a point, 14-13, but Northeastern went on a five-point tear with a pair of Kurz kills to take a commanding 19-13 lead.

Northeastern never looked back and claimed tournament victory after junior transfer Jasmine Marta spiked the final nail in the coffin to help Northeastern grab its fourth-consecutive sweep, 25-21.

The Huskies look to continue their success at the Harvard Invitational next Friday and Saturday, Sept. 16-17. Northeastern battles Navy in the opening match on Friday at 4 p.m. On Saturday, the Huskies tangle with host Harvard at 1 p.m. followed by the closing match with Holy Cross at 4 p.m.
