BOSTON – With just six games remaining in the regular season, the No. 10 Huskies are set for the final portion of the year with a trip to No. 24 Boston College and a visit from No. 25 Maine over the weekend. Northeastern visits the Eagles at 7 p.m. Friday night in Chestnut Hill, before heading up to Durham, N.H., to host the Black Bears at Memorial Field for this year's version of Stick it to Cancer game at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Blazing the Colonial Trail
Thanks in part to nine goals in the last two games for Northeastern, the Huskies are at the top of the conference in myriad ways. NU's 3.08 goals per game are second behind Old Dominion (3.92), and the 20 goals allowed are second only behind James Madison (14).
Senior
Crystal Poland and freshman
Deirdre Duke are a killer one-two punch in the CAA as far as scoring goes. Poland has accrued a career-best seven game winning goals, first in the conference, while Duke has three to her name. The two lead the CAA in shots per game with 5.33 and 3.67, respectively, as well. Poland's 19 goals and 42 points are far and away the most the conference, and Duke's 12 put her in ninth in the league among scorers. Also on the offensive side,
Lindsay Bennett and
Nicky Graham both sit atop the CAA with eight assists apiece.
Defensively,
Christine Tase has been credited with two defensive saves this year, second among CAA players, and
Lizzie Priest's 58 saves are fourth in the league. Her .744 save percentage is third this season among conference goalies.
Huskies Stick it to Cancer
Sunday's home contest against Maine will be this year's edition of Stick it to Cancer for Northeastern. Aside from wearing pink socks to raise awareness, the Huskies have been collecting donations to be used for cancer research.
Reveling in the Records
With her second goal of the game against Harvard on Oct. 3,
Crystal Poland surpassed Denise Nasca and Mari Creatini for sole possession of first place all-time in the Northeastern record books for career goals scored. The senior now has 69 goals in 71 games for the Huskies. Poland, who also has 19 career assists to bring to the table, is just five points shy of tying Creatini's NU record for career points, set at 162 in 2004.
Fresh off capturing her 10
th career shutout in a 5-0 over Delaware,
Lizzie Priest has climbed the record books along with Poland during her senior campaign. Priest's 42 wins for the Red and Black comes in at third all-time in school history, one short of Danielle Butsch in second, and seven shy of tying Brenda Mitchell's record of 49 set in 1992. Her .583 career winning percentage (42-30) is good enough for the seventh-best in Northeastern history, and her 5107:04 spent in the net is second only to Mitchell's astounding 5800 minutes.
All-CAA, All the Time
Prior to the season's start, CAA coaches selected senior
Crystal Poland as the Colonial Athletic Association's Preseason Player of the Year for the second year in a row. Senior goalkeeper
Lizzie Priest joins Poland on the preseason All-CAA team, selected as the conference's best netminder. Both Poland (19g, 4a) and Priest (56 saves) are having respectable seasons thus far.
To add to the laurels,
Deirdre Duke was named the season's first CAA Rookie of the Week (8/28) after her showing against Louisville and Northwestern, and again after the Huskies beat Virginia and Michigan State (9/11). The freshman has five goals this season, three of which are game-winners.
Poland was named as the CAA Co-Player of the Week (9/4) after her three-goal performance against Dartmouth and again (9/11) after another hat trick against Michigan State. The senior earned the conference's distinction for the third time this season on Oct. 9, following a three-goal, one-assist performance in wins over Harvard and Delaware.
Eyeing the Eagles
Boston College (7-6, 1-3 ACC) is set to host Northeastern on the same pitch Northeastern hosted Old Dominion on Sept. 23. The Eagles are coming off a 4-0 loss to No. 2 North Carolina, but were on a three-game win streak before then, including a 2-1 win over Duke in Durham, N.C. Worth noting, BC is 0-4 this year as the home team, while going 5-1 on the road and 2-1 at neutral sites.
The Eagles are led on offense by junior Virgynia Muma and senior Jacqui Moorfield, who have combined for 21 points, 11 and 10, respectively. Chapin Duke is second on the team with four goals, accruing eight points in 2012. Freshman Leah Settipane is the only goalkeeper on the roster and has played every minute in the cage for BC, tallying 62 saves on the year.
Northeastern is 22-11-1 against Boston College all-time, including a thrilling 2-1, double overtime win for the Huskies a year ago.
Minding Maine
The Black Bears and Huskies face off in Durham, N.H., one of NU's two home games at Memorial Field. Maine is 9-5 on the year (2-0 in America East play) and is 8-1 in its last nine contests. Maine and Northeastern share six similar opponents this season.
Only two Black Bears have over 10 points on the season, but Annabelle Hamilton and Cassidy Svetek have combined for 33 points, 19 and 14, respectively. Hamilton, named the AEC Player of the Week two weeks ago, has a team high and impressive 76 shots this year. Both Alicia Frisch and Sydney Kolysher have split significant time in the cage, combining for 57 saves in 2012.
This will be the 29th meeting between the two squads, with NU holding a distinct 22-5-1 advantage in the series. Last year's meeting ended favorably for the Huskies in a 3-2 win in Boston.
