Box Score
DURHAM, N.H. – After scoring three goals in the first period against No. 25 Maine on Sunday afternoon, No. 10 Northeastern was forced into its fourth extra frame of the season. Even though the Huskies were tamed in the second half, senior
Nicky Graham put the Black Bears away with a goal at the 77:50 mark to give the Huskies a 4-3 overtime win.
NU started out strong after a slow performance at Boston College two days prior.
Zoe Kale put the Huskies on the board first with a shot in the middle of the circle, fed to her by fellow freshman classmate
Deirdre Duke. The goal was Kale's first of her career, while Duke earned her third assist.
Maine countered the attack just three minutes later when Holly Stewart tied things up at 1-1 wiith a rebound goal at 13:55. After a brief lull in the action and nearing the half-hour mark in the contest,
Crystal Poland notched her remarkable 20th goal of the season -- and 70th of her career -- off a penalty corner drag flick.
Kelly Dunn earned an assist, her first of the season, as did
Nicky Graham. Poland had a game-high 15 shots (eight on goal) for the Huskies in the contest.
Caroline Judge stepped up for the Huskies with under two minutes remaining in the stanza, putting NU up 3-1 with her fifth goal of the year. The Huskies had 19 shots (eight on target) and eight corners in the first half, both season highs.
The Black Bears turned the game around in the second half, however, scoring first at 48:59 off another rebound shot, then again at 57:16 on a breakaway play to even things at 3-3. Both shots grazed
Lizzie Priest's pads as they trickled in. Priest would finish the game with six solid saves, however.
After a couple of good chances for the Huskies as time wound down in regulation, the Black Bears held on defense, forcing an extra period. Northeastern took full advantage of the 5-on-5 scenario, not allowing Maine to take a full offensive possession. The Huskies, meanwhile, took four shots and four corners in overtime, but it was a breakaway that led to the final tally.
Deirdre Duke showed off her ability to move the ball in the open field, slicing through defenders towards the circle. The freshman passed to Graham directly in front of UM's Alicia Frisch, and Graham's one-timer screamed to the back of the cage, sealing the deal for Northeastern.
The Huskies return to the pitch Friday afternoon with a showdown with conference foe Hofstra back in Durahm, before returning to the Boston area for a game against Boston U at Harvard's Jordan Field.
