Box Score
DURHAM, N.H. – Freshman forward
Deirdre Duke notched four goals and
Crystal Poland added two of her own -- the second of which gave the senior yet another Northeastern record -- to help No. 10 Northeastern (12-3, 4-1 CAA) to a 7-1 drubbing of conference foe Hofstra on Friday afternoon in less-than-ideal weather conditions.
Poland's four points in the game vaulted her to the top of the NU record books, as she has amassed a staggering 163 points. Earlier in the year, against Harvard on Oct. 3, Poland passed Diane Nasca and Mari Creatini for the most goals scored in four years on Huntington Ave. Friday, she passed Creatini's 2004 record of 162 career points scored.
Duke's four goals gave her 11 on the year and were the most scored by a Husky since Creatini accomplished the feat against UMBC over nine years ago, on Sept. 21, 2003. Her eight points on the day were the most since Poland registered eight as a freshman against Harvard on Sept. 30, 2009.
The Huskies moved to 10-0 when drawing first blood, thanks to a penalty corner just 3:22 into the game. As has been the case time after time,
Lindsay Bennett pushed the ball to
Nicky Graham, who stopped and set up Poland's drag flick for the score. Grasping the momentum, Northeastern struck again under two minutes later when Bennett made a selfless pass to Duke right in front of the cage. The freshman put it home for the Huskies' second goal of the day.
After a lull in play, Duke and the Huskies struck again.
Kate Carlson's shot deflected off of Hofstra's Kaitlyn De Turo's pads, giving Duke yet another wide open line to the cage after some nifty dribbling in the circle.
The Pride eventually snuck one past senior goalkeeper
Lizzie Priest when Jillian Geysen was fed a nice pass from Jonel Boileau after a long clearing pass from the opposite side of the pitch. Priest would only face two more shots in the game, however, saving both for a two-save win (her 44th of her remarkable career). In the final seven minutes,
Cara Ahlgrim came in for Priest in relief, registering a save, her first of the season.
Not three minutes following the Pride's only score of the day, Duke completed a hat trick in the first period when she deflected a hard shot by
Caroline Judge into the back of the net. Northeastern would take a commanding 4-1 lead into halftime, but the Huskies were far from finished.
Coming out of the break, NU kept up its first-half pace, and it certainly paid dividends. The first goal of the second half went to Poland who directed a shot by Duke past De Turo. The goal at 39:07, Poland's CAA-best 22nd of the year, gave her the record-clinching 164th point and Northeastern a 5-1 lead. A meager 24-seconds later, Duke tallied her remarkable fourth of the game as she controlled the ball alone in the circle, guiding the ball home for NU's sixth of the day.
Able to lift their paws off the gas pedal, the Huskies played keep-away from the Pride as near-monsoon conditions poured from the New Hampshire sky. In the driving wind and rain, Bennett capped off Northeastern's afternoon with a goal of her own at the 55:12 mark, the junior's third goal of the year and fourth point of the day.
When all was said and done, and the weather cleared, Northeastern asserted itself to a 7-1 win to move to 12-3 on the season and, most importantly, 4-1 in conference play.
NU steps outside of CAA action for the last time this season with a trip to Cambridge to take on the Boston University Terriers at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
