Terriers top Huskies in double overtime thriller, 4-3

Box Score

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – It took more than 92 minutes on the pitch, but No. 13 Boston University upset No. 10 Northeastern, 4-3, in double overtime on Sunday afternoon. The Huskies, who were backed by two goals and an assist from Crystal Poland on the day, move to 12-4 on the season, but still maintain their crucial 4-1 record within the CAA.

BU gave Northeastern a taste of its own medicine with an early goal from Sofi Laurito at the 2:58 mark, setting the tone for the Terriers from the get-go. It wasn't until past the halfway mark of the first (17:15) when NU scored its first goal of the day. With some congestion inside the BU circle, the Huskies earned a penalty stroke, which Poland converted on for her 23rd goal of the season.

But the Terriers came back, however, with Ella Gunson's first of three goals on the afternoon with a reverse stick drive to the top left side of the cage, putting BU up, 2-1 heading into the break.

Just two minutes into the second period, Northeastern earned a pair of penalty corners, the second of which Poland sliced into the back of the cage to even things up at 2-2. Still on the attack after knotting the game up, Northeastern gained its first lead when Poland's long pass from outside the circle was deflected in by Lindsay Bennett, putting NU up 3-2 with momentum.

Both sides played wonderful defense for much of the game, killing multiple scoring chances for their opponents. But BU managed to even the ledger once again with another goal from Gunson, her second of the day, off of a penalty corner opportunity. The score, which came at the 55-minute mark, stole Northeastern's momentum, and eventually forced overtime -- each team's fifth of the season.

The tense overtime featured a BU goal called back -- followed by a yellow card on Gunson -- and a Terrier penalty stroke that hit the post. Senior goalkeeper Lizzie Priest was peppered by Terrier shots throughout the first extra frame, but stood tall, stopping three scoring opportunities. Nicky Graham also played big in the circle, earning a defensive save by diving in front of an empty net. The Huskies couldn't convert on their only shot in the first overtime, but the defense thwarted five BU penalty corners and three shots on goal to force a second OT period.

Midway through the second extra frame, after NU had registered two shots on goal, Gunson struck again, this time with the golden goal capping her hat trick. BU's Jess Maroney had stopped 12 shots up until that point, earning the win for the Terriers.

Northeastern returns to CAA play with the final weekend of the regular season on closing in. The Huskies will travel to Philadelphia to take on Drexel on Friday, before returning home for Senior Day against Towson back in Cambridge.
