CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In its season finale, which doubled as Senior Day for eight Huskies, No. 10 Northeastern handled Towson, 6-0, on Sunday behind four goals from fourth-year forward
Crystal Poland. Classmate
Hannah Hoelscher added a goal and an assist of her own, and both
Olivia Bass and
Allison Conti registered assists in NU's dominating win.
Fellow senior
Lizzie Priest was rock solid in the cage for the Huskies, stopping the only four shots that came her way for a 61:11 shutout victory. The win gives Priest 45 for her career.
Prior to the contest, all eight members of the senior class were honored for their contributions to the Northeastern field hockey program and the Northeastern community throughout their four years. Classmates
Lizzie Priest,
Crystal Poland,
Olivia Bass,
Emily Norell,
Allison Conti,
Nicky Graham,
Hannah Hoelscher and
Christine Tase led the Huskies to 46 wins as a class, the most since 2007 for a four-year bunch.
Poland's four goals on the afternoon gives the Crofton, British Columbia, native 28 for the season, topping her previous career-best of 27 -- set a year ago -- for the second-highest single-season total at Northeastern in program history. The four-goal performance ties freshman
Deirdre Duke's scoring frenzy in the 7-1 win over Hofstra on Oct. 19 for the best scoring game for NU since 2003. Against Towson Sunday, Duke got on the board again, this time with a goal and an assist.
The Huskies finished the day with an astronomical 45 shots to Towsons five. NU did not allow a single penalty corner all day, earning 12 of its own. In their last two games, the Huskies have out earned the opposition, 22-1 on corners.
Poland got the Red and Black rolling quite early, 21 seconds into the start of the game, in fact. After a Duke shot that was saved, the Huskies earned their fourth penalty stroke of the season -- and Poland remained perfect, knocking the eighth freebie of her career.
But after the Huskies took the early lead, things started to slow down for the potent offense. At the 28:14 mark, Duke sent in a long shot from outside the circle, right in
Hannah Hoelscher's wheelhouse, and the senior sent it home to the left side of the cage for NU's second goal of the game. That score was Hoelscher's second of her career.
With the short halftime, came halftime adjustments that seemed to work. Once again, Poland scored quickly to start the period, this time just 54 seconds into the second stanza. The senior used beautiful stick handling to glide by Tiger defenders and put her second of the day in the cage.
Over 12 minutes of game time later, Poland completed the hat trick when she corralled her own saved shot and fired one high into the net. The score tied her previous career-best and put the Huskies up a comfortable 4-0. Not settled on stopping, Poland and the Northeastern offense kept at it and eventually converted on a corner play. Hoelscher fed the ball to
Allison Conti, who set up Poland's fourth goal of the day.
Duke, who tallied 14 shots on day, nine of which were sent in on target, connected for her 12th of the season when she received a nice feed from
Olivia Bass inside the circle at 65:44. The goal put the Huskies up, 6-0, which would ultimately prove to be the deciding score.
The win moves Northeastern to 13-5, 5-2 in conference play. Following the conclusion of the regular season for all CAA teams, the Huskies will learn their fate in the conference tournament. NU will likely receive a first-round bye and play one of four teams on Friday at the tournament's host school.
