Northeastern vs. George Mason
Since the Huskies joined the CAA in 2005, they have taken nine of 12 matchups against the Patriots. Last season, the two teams met in Fairfax, Va., on Oct. 14 with Northeastern winning by a score of 3-0. Outside hitters
Janelle Tucker and
Kelly Bacon led NU with 12 and 11 kills, respectively, while setter
Jillian Briner contributed eight kills, 16 assists and 10 digs. Zonjic paced George Mason with 11 kills, and Noelle Fanella chipped in 10 kills of her own. The Huskies and Patriots have never met outside of conference action.
Scouting George Mason
The Patriots (3-12, 1-1 CAA) come to Boston still looking for their first win away from home during the 2012 season, having notched home victories against UMBC, West Virginia and Georgia State. Mason is led offensively by Lana Zonjic, who has a team-highs in kills (172), attacks (545) and service aces (17). Danielle Cook has the Patriots' best hitting percentage at .282, and Tori Price has accounted for 428 of George Mason's 553 assists this year (77.4%). Defensively, Mason is led by Bernetta Moore's 233 digs and Lolade Owokoniran's 55 total blocks. Head coach Pat Kendrick has led the Patriots since 1985. The last time here squad finished below .500 was in 2008-09 (9-18 • .333).
14 and counting
This weekend, the Huskies (14-3, 3-0 CAA) will put their 14-game home winning streak on the line when they host George Mason on Friday at 7 p.m. and James Madison on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Solomon Court. NU, with a home record of 8-0, is one of nine Division I teams with eight or more home wins and no home losses. It is the longest home streak in program history.
Tucker takes top honors
After recording double-doubles in a pair of wins over UNCW and William & Mary on Sept. 28th and Sept. 30th, respectively, junior outside hitter
Janelle Tucker (Encino, Calif.) was named CAA Offensive Player of the Week on Oct 1. Against UNCW, she recorded 15 kills with only two attacking errors. Her hitting percentage for the match was .500, and she also chipped in 11 digs. Against the Tribe, Tucker tallied 10 kills against two attacking errors, while also contributing 10 digs for her 23rd career double-double. She became NU's fourth winner this season, joining
Natalia Skiba's two defensie awards and
Kelly Bacon's Co-CAA Offensive Player of the Week.
Conference leaders
Not only does Northeastern sit in first place in the CAA, they also rank highly in the conference in several team and individual categories. As a squad, NU is first in opponent's hitting percentage (.163), and second in team hitting percentage (.238), assists per set (13.32), kills per set (14.42) and service aces per set (1.55). Sophomore
Natalia Skiba leads the CAA in both digs per set (5.60) and service aces per set (0.43), while Bacon is currently second in kills per set (3.55). In individual hitting percentage, junior
Nichole Kurz is ranked second in the conference (.354), and
Jillian Briner is seventh (.323).
Early leads
This season, Northeastern is 13-1 in games where they win the first set, with the lone loss coming in the 3-1 setback to Duke on Sept. 8. The Huskies are 30-3 over the last two seasons, and 42-7 over the last three years, when they win the first set.
Double-doubles
The Huskies have had 20 different individual double-doubles this season.
Jillian Briner leads the team with seven, including two triple-doubles.
Kelly Bacon is second on Northeastern in double-doubles with five, while
Janelle Tucker has four, junior
Ina Kamenova has three and
Nichole Kurz has one.
Iron women
Six Huskies – Bacon, Briner, Tucker, Bishop, Kamenova and Skiba – have appeared in all 60 sets for Northeastern this season.
Don't let September end
Northeastern just capped a fantastic month of September, amassing a winning record of 10-2 (.833). That mark denotes the best month of September under the direction of head coack
Ken Nichols. The last time NU met that mark was in 1998 when the Huskies posted a 14-2 (.875) record.
Top notch
Northeastern is currently ranked in the top-50 nationally in four different statistical categories. The Huskies are 22nd in kills per set with 14.42, 28th in aces per set with 1.55 and 28th in assists per set with 13.22. The winning percentage of .824 is 27th best in the country, better than 303 other programs in the country.
