Offensive onslaught keys Huskies' 5-0 win over Blue Hens

Box Score

NEWARK, Del. – No. 8 Northeastern peppered Delaware with a season-high 21 shots, 15 on target, routing the Blue Hens, 5-0, on Friday night behind two goals apiece from Caroline Judge and Deirdre Duke. Goalkeeper Lizzie Priest moved into third place all-time in NU history with her 42nd win, earning her 10th career shutout in the process. The always-dependable senior stopped the only two shots that came her way on the evening, thanks to some help from a tenacious Husky defense.

Delaware finished the game with just eight shots, but both squads earned an even five penalty corners.

For the fifth time this year, Crystal Poland netted the Huskies' first goal of the game, this time connecting on a penalty corner at the 4:58 mark. The goal, Poland's CAA-leading 19th of the year and Northeastern-record 69th of her career, gave NU a familiar early advantage, going up 1-0 on the Blue Hens.

Just over five minutes of game time elapsed until Caroline Judge rebounded and capitalized off a Lindsay Bennett shot in the circle, putting the Huskies up 2-0. At 22:35, Judge tapped in another ball from right in front of the Delaware cage, extending Northeastern's first-half lead to 3-0. With the two goal performance, the sophomore Judge now has four goals on the season as a second-year player. Just before the break, Deirdre Duke nearly gave the Huskies' their second four-goal lead in consecutive games, but UD's Megane Simons prevented such an occurence with a nice save in front of the cage.

Duke, refusing to be deterred, kept up the NU pace, scoring two goals in a span of 1:05. With just over nine minutes remaining, the freshman sliced one in directly in front of Simons for her sixth goal of the season. Duke completed her second two-goal performance at the 61:20 mark, rocketing in a centering pass from Poland, giving the Huskies a daunting 5-0 lead. With seven goals on the year, Duke sits near the top of the conference in scoring, as far as first-year players are concerned.

Delaware spent the final 13-plus minutes without getting anywhere near Priest and the stingy Husky defense, unable to even get one shot off to attempt a comeback. Eventually time ran out for the Blue Hens, and the Huskies preserved their 10th win -- and first shutout -- of the season. The rolling Red and Black return to the pitch one week from Friday, visiting Boston College at 7 p.m. in Chestnut Hill.
