NU drops Dukes in straight sets, extends home win steak to 16

Bishop's 12 kills led a balanced NU attack. The Huskies now sit at 5-0 in CAA play, 16-3 overall.

BOSTON --  The Northeastern women's volleyball team continued its winning ways on Sunday afternoon, sweeping James Madison, 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-23) at Solomon Court.
 
The Huskies (16-3, 5-0 CAA) won their sixteenth consecutive home match behind 12 kills from senior captain Nicole Bishop. Junior Ina Kamenova had a team-high 20 assists, while sophomore Jillian Briner chipped in 15 assists of her own. Sophomore Natalia Skiba led Northeastern in digs with 11, and junior captain Janelle Tucker had three service aces as well as nine kills.
 
The Dukes (9-9, 2-2 CAA) were led by Lizzy Briones' 13 kills and Megan Wiechmann's 23 assists. Sarah Patterson recorded 14 assists, and Katie Doarai had a team-high nine digs on the afternoon.
 
The first set opened with the visitors holding a four-point advantage early, with the Dukes jumping out to an 11-7 lead. The Huskies went on a 4-0 run to tie the set at 11-all, and eventually took their first lead of the match at 13-12 on a Bishop kill. Northeastern would take a three-point lead at 19-16, but James Madison notched the next three points to tie the set once again at 19-19. The two squads went back-and-forth for the remainder of the set before NU managed to claim a 25-23 first-set win on another Bishop kill.
 
Bishop and junior Kelly Bacon led the Huskies' offensive efforts in the opening frame, with five kills apiece, and Bacon also had a team-high four digs. Briner and Kamenova contributed eight and seven assists, respectively, and Northeastern had a team attack percentage of .448 in the set. JMU was led by Briones' six kills and Wiechmann's eight assists.
 
The Dukes took a 4-1 lead to start the second set, but the Huskies went on an 8-0 run make it 9-4. Northeastern would expand its lead to six at 13-7. James Madison would cut the deficit to three, 16-13 on a Danielle Erb kill, but NU pushed the lead back to six, 19-13, on a Skiba service ace. The Huskies would eventually clinch the set, 25-18, on another ace, this time from junior Brianna Hollis.
 
Briner and Tucker led Northeastern with three kills each in the second set, and Kamenova did the majority of the setting with six assists. Skiba and Kamenova both had four digs to help NU's defensive efforts, while Briner and Bishop both recorded solo blocks in the set. Erb and MacKenzie Kleespies had three kills each to lead JMU.
 
The third set saw neither team able to pull away early, as they found themselves tied at 9-9. Northeastern slowly built a four-point lead at 18-14. James Madison would climb within one at 22-21, but the Huskies held on to win the set 25-23 on a Tucker kill.
 
There was little defense by either side in the match, with both teams recording an attack percentage over .300. The Huskies had 43 kills and seven errors on 85 attacks for a .424 percentage, while the Dukes had 41 kills and 12 errors on 92 attacks for a .315 percentage.
 
Northeastern will head on the road for six of their final seven matchups of the season, starting with a trip to Hempstead, N.Y. on Saturday. Nu will take on Hofstra at 7 p.m.
