Northeastern vs. St. Lawrence
Northeastern takes on St. Lawrence on Black Friday for the first time in almost a decade. The last time the Huskies and Saints squared off was on Nov. 29, 2002, at Appleton Arena where NU skated to a 2-1 victory. The last time SLU played at Matthews Arena was on Nov. 24, 2001. In that affair, Northeastern emerged victoriously, 4-1. Despite the prolonged break in action between these two historic institutions, the Huskies and Saints are not strangers and have waged battle to a nearly even overall record. Northeastern leads St. Lawrence in the overall series, 14-12-2. This is the first ECAC time Northeastern has skated against aside from Harvard (either in the Beanpot or on Jan. 19, 2011) since tying Rensselaer, 2-2, on Oct. 15, 2010. Friday's post-Thanksgiving affair will pit two fairly new coaches to the test. SLU's Greg Carvel is in his first season at the helm.
Saintly Scoring
St. Lawrence enters Friday's contest with a 5-3-2 mark wit most of those wins occurring outside of ECAC action. The Saints are 5-1-0 in non-conference action with a noteworthy win over Western Michigan. SLU also defeated both Maine and Alabama-Hunstville twice as well. As for ECAC play, St. Lawrence tied both Brown and Princeton and lost to Yale and No. 18 Quinnipiac. SLU started off hot with a 5-1-1 mark but is winless in its last four outings. A big part of St. Lawrence's .600 winning percentage is the tandem of Kyle Flanagan and Greg Carey. Flanagan and Carey represent the second and third most prolific scorers in the NCAA to date, averaging 1.90 and 1.80 points per game, respectively. Their respective eight goals apiece are tied for sixth in the nation while Flanagan's 1.10 apg and Carey's 1.00 apg are tied for third and fifth, in that order, in all the land. Both have been a force on the power play, as well, accounting for four PPGs each. Junior netminder Matt Weninger has started all 10 games and pitched a pair of shutouts. Weninger backstops a defense tied for 19th in the NCAA and is getting help from a 12th-ranked offense that averages 3.3 goals per game.
Roy-llin' Out
Rookie sensation
Kevin Roy added to his strong start with his first-career two-goal game at Vermont on Nov. 18. Roy became the second Husky to score a pair this season, following
Ludwig Karlsson's performance on Nov 10 against Alabama-Huntsville. The Nov. 18th outing stands as Roy's fourth multi-point effort of the season. The Lac-Beauport, Quebec, native leads the team in scoring with 11 points (5-6-11). Nationally speaking, Roy leads all rookies in Hockey East with 1.00 points per game and is tied for 48th in the country in scoring amongst all skaters. His 0.45 goals per game is tied for sixth in Hockey East and tied for 71st in the NCAA.
Extra Extra
In
Kevin Roy's two-goal performance at UVM on Nov. 18, one of his tallies was with the extra attacker. The Huskies had not scored with an extra attacker since
Mike McLaughlin turned the trick at New Hampshire on Feb. 10, 2012.
Witt-y
Junior goaltender
Clay Witt saw his first action in net for Northeastern on Nov. 16 at Providence since starting against Boston University on March 3, 2012. In 37:02 minutes of work, Witt turned away 17-of-20 shots. The Brandon, Fla., native has appeared in 16 games for NU with six starts. Witt possesses an overall record of 3-5-0 with a 2.97 GAA and a .914 save percentage.
Streakers
Senior captain
Vinny Saponari has been on fire lately, scoring at least one point in his last six games. The Powder Springs, Ga., native's six-game point scoring streak is a career best and he has accounted for seven points (3-4-7) within that time. Junior
Cody Ferriero matched his longest-career point streak at four games and has accounted for as many points (1-3-4) within that stretch. It marks the Essex, Mass., native's longest point streak since scoring four points from Nov. 18 to Dec. 2, 2011.
Pair of PPGs
Despite a lopsided score at Providence on Nov. 16, Northeastern scored a pair of power play goals for the first time this season. The last time NU put away a pair on the power play was on Jan. 27, 2012, at Vermont. Last season, Northeastern scored two or more power play goals four times.
Elevating past 3,000
Through 105 career games played,
Chris Rawlings broke the 3,000-save plateau against Providence with 10 saves on Nov. 16. The North Delta, B.C., native is in third place all-time in career saves and needs just 164 more to eclipse Brad Thiessen's mark of 3,166 to move into second place. Bruce Racine (1984-88) is the school's leader with 3,557.
Game-Pimming goals
Junior
Braden Pimm's first goal against Alabama-Huntsville on Nov. 10 counted for his fifth-career game-winning goal. The Fort St. John, B.C., native leads the Huskies in game-winning goals by a large margin. No other skater on the roster has more than two in their career while at Northeastern (
Vinny Saponari has six total, but four were scored at Boston University).
