PHILADELPHIA – Two evenly matched teams in Drexel and Northeastern took to Buckley Field on Sunday afternoon, fighting for the CAA Tournament championship, but it was the host and first-seeded Dragons who came away with the 2-1 overtime victory. The Huskies, this year's No. 2 seed, fought valiantly until the end, forcing Drexel to play up to the competition much of the game, but an overtime goal from DU's Christina Conrad squandered the Huskies' conference title hopes.
After the dust had settled, three Huskies were named to the 2012 All-CAA Tournament Team for their performances, in
Crystal Poland,
Christine Tase and
Deirdre Duke. All three were among the most deserving of the field of players from six CAA teams.
Northeastern, once again playing to its advantages, was first on the board thanks to a beautiful cross-field play.
Crystal Poland corralled the ball near the midfield line, weaving in and out of traffic towards the circle. Her dangles left Drexel in the dust and
Deirdre Duke wide open in front of the cage with momentum towards DU's Jantien Gunter. Duke rocketed one past a defender and Gunter, putting NU up early, 1-0.
Drexel showed why it was the first seed this year, when the tournament's Most Outstanding Performer, Amanda Fleischut, sent one in towards the cage. The ball hit off an NU defender and careened into the net, just out of the reach of
Lizzie Priest's stick and pads. The goal, evening things at 1-1, would be the last scoring action for over 50 minutes.
At halftime, Northeastern led in just about every category on offense, including shots and penalty corners, but into the second half, Drexel kept the Huskies at bay. NU earned a couple more corners and added a few more shots, but the Dragon's defense picked up a defensive save and big stops by Gunter to prevent any more NU goals. Much of the second half was an even, back-and-forth battle between the two teams.
After neither team could convert its opportunities in the 35 minutes of the second half, the game was to be decided in overtime. Coming into Sunday, the Huskies were 3-0 in overtime, but 0-2 in double overtime. With the 7-on-7 matchup, the Huskies looked strong, controlling the ball and tempo to start off the free period. But Drexel was eventually able to lock up possession and earned two consecutive penalty corners. The second of those two proved to be the difference as Conrad received the ball from Fleischut and glided one just under Priest for the winning score.
With the loss, the Huskies (14-6, 5-2 CAA) must wait until Tuesday to hear their possible future in the NCAA tournament. The NCAA selection show is set for
8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6 on NCAA.com.
