Continuing its season-opening seven-game road stretch, the Huskies look to remain unbeaten when they travel north to Hanover, N.H., to face Dartmouth at 2 p.m. Sunday. Northeastern knocked off No. 23 Louisville, 3-2, and No. 20 Northwestern, 2-1, last weekend to give them back-to-back wins over ranked opponents to start the year.
Young the Giants
Northeastern has eight seniors on its roster, all of whom have made an impact over their careers, but the underclassmen are making their case for recognition as well. Two of the five freshmen that head coach
Cheryl Murtagh brought in this season have found spots in the starting lineup:
Zoe Kale and
Deirdre Duke, who registered the game-winning goal over Louisville.
Vanessa Pryor and
Leah Edmondson also have seen playing time for the Huskies over the first two games.
Sophomores
Caroline Judge and
Kate Carlson have been inserted into the starting lineup as well, playing alongside fellow classmates
Kelly Dunn and
Allena Dennis, who have both made appearances this season.
Winning Wildly
Last year, 11 of the Huskies' 14 wins were by two goals or fewer, and seven of those came by one only score. In all, Northeastern was involved in 16 games that were decided by two goals or fewer in 2011. This season appears to be on the same pace, with the same wild finishes. Both of NU's wins in 2012 have been by just one goal, and the upset of No. 20 Northwestern came by way of a
Crystal Poland penalty conversion with 0:00 remaining on the board.
All-CAA, All the Time
Prior to the season's start, CAA coaches selected senior
Crystal Poland as the Colonial Athletic Association's Preseason Player of the Year for the second year in a row. Senior goalkeeper
Lizzie Priest joins Poland on the preseason All-CAA team, selected as the conference's best netminder. Both Poland (3g, 1a) and Priest (14 saves) are having respectable starts. To add to the laurels,
Deirdre Duke was named the season's first CAA Rookie of the Week (8/28) after her performances over the weekend against Louisville and Northwestern.
O Captains, My Captains
Just before the season's start, seniors
Allison Conti and
Christine Tase were named this year's captains. Both have proved their mettle, bringing three years of hard work to the table. Conti has now played 63 games as a midfielder for the Huskies, notching three goals to go along with four assists. Tase worked her way into the starting lineup for NU as a junior after playing solid defense throughout her career. Even though she plays back, Tase recorded her first career point last season with an assist on the game-winning goal over VCU. She had a crucial defensive save against Northwestern that preserved the Huskies' chances at the win.
Sizing up the Big Green
Dartmouth, set to begin its season Friday against Massachusetts, is coming off back-to-back 10-7 seasons in the Ivy League. The Big Green finished third in the league a year ago and return for the 13th season under head coach Amy Fowler. Dartmouth lost seniors Kelly Hood (14g, 5a) and Meagan Vaklener (72 saves) to graduation, but the Big Green return Ali Savage (12g, 3a) and leading inserter Lisa Masini (4g, 18a), both of whom will keep DC competitive.
