Huskies snap two-game skid in four sets over Idaho

Box Score

The Northeastern volleyball team snapped its two-game skid with a 3-1 (22-25, 25-18, 26-24, 26-24) triumph against Idaho in the Huskies' final game of the UCSB Invitational on Saturday evening.

Junior outside hitter Kelly Bacon turned in a season-best 17 kills and hit .312 on 32 attempts while classmate Janelle Tucker's 14 kills also stood as a season best. Senior Jasmine Marta slammed down a season-best eight kills as did junior Nichole Kurz. Senior captain Nicole Bishop and junior Janelle Tucker each contributed six kills apiece.

Second-year libero Natalia Skiba notched 17 digs to direct the Huskies' defensive efforts. Kurz stood tall at net and blocked seven Vandals' attempts, tying a match high. Sophomore Jillian Briner led Northeastern with 31 assists.

Skiba was also named to the All-Tournament Team, marking her second-straight tournament honor this season.

Northeastern dominated across the board categorically, leading Idaho in kills (59-45), digs (52-51) and blocks (14-9).

The Huskies led by two in the initial set, 7-5, after junior Ina Kamenova cornered an ace, but Idaho ran off an 8-1 spurt and took control. After trailing 14-8, the Huskies forced a Vandal timeout after three-straight kills and a Skiba ace to creep within a point, 14-13. Out of the timeout, Skiba managed two straight aces to give NU a one-point edge, 15-14, but Idaho's attack was too strong towards the end and the Vandals won the first set, 25-22.

The Vandals claimed the first two points of the second set, but Tucker led the charge with six straight serves yielding six consecutive points. Idaho hit a couple wayward swings before Kurz and Bacon put the Huskies up 6-2 in the second stanza.

Junior Brianna Hollis served up an ace to move the Huskies ahead, 14-8, and the Vandals hailed for a timeout. Despite the breather, Northeastern maintained control and closed out the second set wit a 25-18 victory.

Bacon's kill got the Huskies off on the right foot to start the third set. Northeastern never trailed in that frame, giving the Huskies a 2-1 lead with great momentum moving forward to the fourth set.

Even with the momentum, the Huskies and Vandals went back-and-forth in set No. 4, with seven ties before NU finally took a decisive advantage at 22-21 behind a crucial after a Tucker kill. Consecutive kills by Kurz and Briner finished off Idaho in a thrilling, 26-24 final set to give Northeastern the win.
