Huskies escape from Amherst with a 4-3 OT victory

Box Score
AMHERST, Mass. – It took longer than the usual 70 minutes, but No. 7 Northeastern still got the job done across the Bay State, escaping from Amherst with a 4-3 overtime victory over UMass Friday evening. In the overtime period, freshman Deirdre Duke's shot deflected off a defender into the cage, securing the Huskies' sixth win this season to remain undefeated.

Senior Crystal Poland added two goals (including a penalty stroke), and redshirt sophomore Kelly Dunn added one more of her own to the Huskies' cause. Senior goalkeeper Lizzie Priest recorded seven saves to earn the hard-fought win.

UMass gave Northeastern a taste of its own medicine to start the contest off, scoring twice within the first seven minutes, putting the Huskies in an unfamiliar early hole. Both of the Minutewomen's goals came from free plays in the circle and seemed to catch NU off guard.

But the Huskies settled down a bit after the deficit when Kelly Dunn notched NU's first score off a redirect directly in front of the cage. Dunn's goal, at the 10:30 mark, was the first of her career and came in a game against her twin sister, Marisa, who is a redshirt sophomore midfielder.

Northeastern found itself down after 35 minutes for just the second time this year, taking a 2-1 deficit into the break. To start the second stanza, the Huskies came out with a little more zest, firing a couple of shots towards the net in the early going. Then NU earned a penalty stroke -- its second of the year -- at the 47:46 mark, which was taken and capitalized on by Crystal Poland. The score was the senior's 12th of the year and knotted things up at 2-2.

After both teams traded possessions, Poland got into the scoring mix once again, knocking in her CAA-leading 13th score of the year, deflecting in a long-range shot past the keeper. The goal, at 59:50, seemed to give NU the final bit of momentum, but UMass was eager to punch their ticket for an upset bid. Thando Zono scored for the Minutewomen with a mere 58-seconds left on the clock, sending the game into an unwanted overtime.

In the extra period, UMass nearly capitalized on a deflection, but Priest acted as a force shield in the cage, stopping every attempt thrown her way. At 76:56, Deirdre Duke sealed the deal when her shot deflected into the net, ending the game abruptly in Northeastern's favor. The goal was Duke's third of the season, and third game-winner.

The Huskies stay in New England this weekend, but still must travel to Durham, N.H., to take on the Wildcats of UNH. First whistle is set for 4 p.m. Sunday.
