Huskies will their way past William & Mary; NU now 3-0 in CAA

BOSTON - The Northeastern women's volleyball team defeated William & Mary on Sunday afternoon at Solomon Court, taking out the Tribe, 3-1 (25-14, 25-23, 21-25, 25-13). With the win, the Huskies extend their home winning streak to 14 games, the longest in program history. Northeastern is currently on a six-game tear, winning 18-of-22 sets.

The Huskies (14-3, 3-0 CAA) were led by sophomore Jillian Briner's third career triple-double, with 12 kills, 20 assists and 11 digs. Northeastern also got double-doubles from juniors Ina Kamenova (27 assists, 13 digs) and Janelle Tucker (10 kills, 10 digs). Sophomore Natalia Skiba once again led the team in digs, recording 23 in the win. Senior Nicole Bishop had four blocks, including three solo.

The Tribe (10-6, 2-1 CAA) were led by 13 kills and 12 digs from Dessi Koleva, and they also got 12 digs from Devin Andrews-Lyssy. Molly Krull had a team-high 22 assists, and Carolyn Albright led William & Mary with five blocks.

The Huskies jumped out to a 9-0 lead to open the first set, with six of those nine points coming on Tribe errors. William & Mary never cut the deficit to less than eight the rest of the frame, with Northeastern prevailing 25-14. Sophomore Alexa Armstrong provided the final kill for Northeastern. The Huskies had 13 kills and only two attacking errors, with an attacking percentage of .440 in the first frame.

Northeastern had three kills apiece from Briner, Bishop and sophomore Ava Cramp in the opening set. Briner also added a team-high six assists as well as two digs in the set, and Kamenova contributed five assists. Bishop led the Huskies' defensive efforts with three total blocks, and Skiba had a team-high five digs. William & Mary was led by Paulette Grand Pre's three kills and Molly Krull's four assists in the set.

The second set opened closer than the first stanza. The Tribe jumped out to an 11-6 lead and following a Northeastern timeout, the Huskies took the next three points to pull within two, 11-9. William & Mary eventually surrendered the lead when a Tucker kill knotted the set at 15-15. Bishop added another solo block to give Northeastern the lead immediately thereafter, and the Huskies held on to take the set 25-23, with Briner's sixth kill of the match clinching the second set.

Kamenova added ten assists in the second frame, as well as five digs. Northeastern's offense was paced in the set by Bacon and Tucker, who had four kills each. Tucker also added five digs, and Skiba recorded a team-high seven digs in the set.

William & Mary took a 7-4 lead to begin the third set, and pushed the lead to six at 18-12, and seven at 20-13. The Huskies were able to trim the deficit to four at 22-18, but the Tribe held on to take the set 25-21 behind four kills from Manon Murray and three kills apiece from Monika Stanciauskas and Dessi Koleva.

Briner led NU in kills and assists in the third frame, with four and eight, respectively, as well as chipping in three digs. Kamenova added six assists, and Skiba tallied an additional six digs in the set.

The fourth frame was all Northeastern, as the Huskies turned a 7-6 lead into an 18-10 advantage. NU pulled away, winning the set 25-13 on a kill from junior Hanna Gibeau. Bacon had five kills in the set, and Kamenova and Skiba had five digs apiece. NU had its best attack percentage since the first set, with 15 kills and two errors on 30 attacks for a mark of .433.

Northeastern will host a pair of conference opponents next weekend, welcoming George Mason to Solomon Court on Friday at 7 p.m., and James Madison will come to Huntington Ave. on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
