Huskies stifle No. 19 Drexel in 1-0 CAA victory

Box Score  | Season Stats | Post-game Interview

DEDHAM, Mass.—Behind a stifling defensive effort, the Northeastern field hockey team defeated visiting CAA rival Drexel, 1-0, on Friday night at Dedham Field in Dedham, Mass. The Huskies, who improved to 5-7 (1-1 CAA), held the No. 19 Dragons without a shot for the first 22 minutes of the game.

Junior Caroline Judge corralled a rebound and fired home the game's only goal midway through the first half to give NU all the offense it would need. The Huskies defense kept the Drexel attack at bay and freshman Becky Garner made seven saves in goal, her most since a 10-save effort on Sept. 20 against Michigan State.

The action was even through the game's first 10 minutes, with both teams minimizing opportunities for the opposition. The Huskies registered the first true scoring chance of the evening near the 11 minute mark when Maggie Burke put a shot on goal, but the Dragons' Jantien Gunter made one of her three saves.

Just over eight minutes later, NU's Emmy Zweserijn took a direct shot off a penalty corner. Gunter made the save, but Judge quickly rifled the rebound to the back of the cage for her third goal of the season and a 1-0 Northeastern lead.

The Dragons then went on the attack, tallying three shot opportunities off consecutive penalty corners. The Huskies' Garner, though, was true to the task, turning away two shots while the NU defense blocked the third.

Drexel's Lindsay McArdle was issued a green card with just under 90 seconds remaining in the first half, but NU could not capitalize and carried a 1-0 advantage into the break.

The Dragons' best offensive opportunity of the night came four minutes into the second half. Off a penalty corner, Elise DiDonato slid a shot past Garner, but NU's Judge made a dramatic defensive save to keep the Huskies in the lead.

As the clock approached 10 minutes remaining, Drexel put together another offensive push. The Dragons fired three shots in the span of just 90 seconds, but the NU defense again stood firm. The Huskies blocked the first opportunity and Garner turned away the remaining two.

Garner denied two more Drexel attempts in the game's furious final five minutes, behind a smothering defense, to secure victory for the home-standing Huskies.

For Northeastern, it was a second consecutive win, following a 5-3 defeat of La Salle on Sunday, and the second shutout win of the season (5-0 versus Dartmouth on Sept. 13). Head coach Cheryl Murtagh's team will return to action on Sunday when it travels to Orono, Maine, to face the Maine Black Bears at 3 p.m.
