Boston University knocks off field hockey, 2-0

Box Score

DEDHAM, Mass. – Boston University netted a goal late in the first half before adding an insurance goal midway through the second half to down the Northeastern field hockey team (5-9) on Sunday afternoon at Dedham Field, 2-0

Becky Garner made six saves in goal for the Huskies, who were outshot 11-8 in the game. The Terriers also generated four corners to NU's one.

The teams played a back and forth contest for much of the first half, with Boston University outshooting NU 6-3. The Terriers would, however, pot a late goal to take a 1-0 lead into intermission.

BU looked to capitalize on three first half corner chances, but the Northeastern defense wouldn't budge. Garner was forced to make a tough save on a hard shot from Rachel Coll when she hammered a bid on goal off a corner. Minutes later, Garner would deny Sara Martineau on a point blank shot from the left side.

NU tried to generate some offensive changes of its own, and had the best opportunity with less than 10 minutes to play in the half when a shot from Natalie Stewart was blocked by a Terrier before Emmy Zweserijn followed up with a shot that caught the outside of the cage.

Boston University went up 1-0 with 1:30 to play in the first half when Nell Burdis knocked home a loose ball in front of the cage for her third goal of the season.

The physical play between the crosstown rivals increased in the second half, with both teams being assessed green cards late in the game.

The Terriers would extend their lead to 2-0 with 21:13 to play in regulation with Coll rifled home  low shot off a stop from Ysi Schieb on a corner.

Northeastern would attempt to claw its way back into the game following the two-goal hole, and Zweserijn had a couple chances to cut the BU lead in half, but Terrier goalkeeper Valentina Cerda was there to make the saves.

The Huskies will be back in action on Friday when Northeastern travels to Towson for a 6 p.m. game.
