Delaware deals Huskies 3-0 defeat on Senior Day

Box Score

DEDHAM, Mass. — The Northeastern field hockey team lost to league-leading Delaware, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon at Dedham Field in Dedham, Mass.

Becky Garner registered eight saves in goal for Northeastern (6-10-0, 2-2-0 CAA). The Blue Hens' defense, meanwhile, allowed just one shot on goal for the home-standing Huskies.

Head coach Cheryl Murtagh and her staff honored Lindsay Bennett and Maggie Burke in a pre-game Senior Day ceremony. Bennett has 15 goals and 18 assists in 80 career games, while Burke has played in 27 career games, including 15 this season.

Delaware controlled the tempo of play early in the game. The Blue Hens maintained possession in the NU defensive zone for much of the first 15 minutes and registered the first five shots in the contest.

The Huskies defense, backed by Garner, weathered the early onslaught and leveled play, earning two penalty corners in just over three minutes. Natalie Stewart's shot off the first corner was blocked, while Emmy Zweserijn's bid off the second corner sailed just wide of the cage.

The game remained scoreless until the 28-minute mark, when UD's Kasey Prettyman scored from the right side on an opportunity created by a penalty corner. Allie Mikelson inserted the ball before Michaela Patzner slid a pass to Prettyman, who was waiting near the right post.

Just moments later, UD's Mikelson was assessed a green card. After NU's Kelly Dunn missed wide, Toni Popinko carried the ball down the left side for the shorthanded Hens and slid a shot just beyond the reach of a sliding Garner. The goal gave Delaware a 2-0 lead with five minutes remaining in the first half.

Northeastern looked to get on the board early in the second half with a beautifully designed corner play. With the ball on the left side, Dunn moved undetected to the right post. Caroline Judge and Dunn could not connect on the pass, however, ending the scoring threat.

Moments later it was Delaware back on the attack. The Hens fired three shots on goal in little more than 15 seconds. NU's Garner put on a beautiful defensive display, turning away each Blue Hen bid.

Delaware added a third goal in the game's final minutes after a penalty stroke was awarded. Esmee Peet converted the opportunity to set the final score.

Northeastern will return to action on Wednesday when it hosts Harvard at 6 p.m., at Dedham Field.
