Bredahl notches 6th triple-double as NU upsets Charleston

Box Score

Charleston, S.C. – The Northeastern women's volleyball team defeated first-place College of Charleston, 3-2 (22-25, 24-26, 25-23, 25-21, 15-8), after winning three-straight sets in a come-from-behind victory on Sunday afternoon at TD Arena in Charleston, S.C.

The Huskies now hold a 17-9 overall record and maintain a second-place conference rank with a 9-3 CAA mark. With the win, Northeastern snapped the Cougars 11-game winning streak and broke their undefeated conference record. Charleston has not lost a match after leading 2-0 since 2006 when it dropped three-straight sets to Elon University.

Rookie Jamie Bredahl recorded her sixth triple-double of the season with 12 kills, 23 assists and tied a match-best 22 digs. Kelly Bacon showcased another well-rounded performance, posting 21 kills on 18 swings (.333) and matching a game-best 22 digs to mark her fourth consecutive double-double and 17th of the season.  Middle blocker Nichole Kurz tallied 11 kills and four total blocks on the night while her counterpart freshman Caterina Rosander notched three kills and five blocks of her own. Right side Ava Cramp posted a career-high 10 kills to add to the Huskies' victory. Libero Natalia Skiba contributed 20 digs while fourth-year setter Ina Kamenova threw up a team-best 30 assists.

Darcy Dorton recoded the only double-double for the Cougars as she landed 18 kills and added 14 digs during the contest.

College of Charleston took a quick 5-3 lead to kick off the first set, but a CofC error and a Bredahl kill evened the score, 5-5. Gibeau, Kurz and Cramp teamed up for a trio of attacks to go ahead 10-7 as the Huskies maintained a lead until the Cougars landed back-to-back kills to knot it up at 12.

The team's exchanged points until Charleston used a 5-1 run to post a 21-17 advantage. Bacon threw down three kills from the outside in an attempt to give Huskies a chance, but it was not enough to stop the Cougars from taking the first set, 25-22.

Northeastern posted a 2-0 start right out of the chute in the second stanza, but CofC was quick to respond with a Dorton kill and a double block to tie it up. The teams exchanged points in the early goings, but College of Charleston posted a 6-1 stretch to force NU head coach Ken Nichols to burn the first timeout of the set.

Dorton threw down the first kill after the break, but the Huskies posted two consecutive blocks bookending a Bacon swing to knot it up, 17-17. The set was tied six more times down the stretch until the NU and CofC hit the 24 mark.  The Cougars managed one final kill and a double block from the right-side to run away with the second frame, 26-24.

The Cougars hopped on the board first in the third set, but looking to avoid the sweep, the Huskies matched it with a quick attack out of the middle. Even 2-2, Northeastern forced three errors on Charleston's attack to own the lead. Two more offensive errors pushed CofC into a huddle, but it was all Northeastern for the remainder of the frame. NU maintained minimum three-point cushion until the final points when the Cougars came within two while the Huskies stood at set point. CofC landed a huge cross-court kill to bring the score to 24-23, but a Bacon attack kept the Huskies alive, 25-23.

Northeastern's momentum carried over into the fourth set as the Huskies put up a quick 3-0 lead. A 5-1 run extended NU's advantage to set the stage for the remainder of the frame. Charleston came back fighting in the latter half but another Bacon kill capped off the fourth set for the Huskies, 25-21, and even the match, 2-2.

Despite another 3-0 start, the CofC would not back down as it poised a run that would eventually even the, 7-7. The Huskies held Charleston to just one point for the remainder of the set as NU closed out the match with a 15-8 third-set victory.

The Huskies return to Cabot Center to close out their regular season slate against James Madison and William & Mary. NU will take on the Dukes on Friday, Nov. 15 at 4 p.m., before they play their final match against the Tribe on Sunday, Nov. 17.
