Box Score
BOSTON—Despite double-doubles from
Kelly Bacon,
Ina Kamenova, and
Jamie Bredahl, the No. 2 Northeastern women's volleyball team was edged by top-seeded College of Charleston, 3-1 (27-25, 27-25, 25-19, 25-23), in the 2013 Colonial Athletic Association Championship match on Sunday afternoon in Charleston, S.C.
Bacon, who earned an All-CAA First Team honor after her performance this season, led the Huskies with her 20th double-double of the season made up of a match-high 20 kills on 52 swings (.250) and 16 digs along with a block and service ace. Rookie of the Year Bredahl notched her 16th season double-double with 13 kills and 23 assists while adding six digs, two blocks and an ace. All-Conference Third Team member Kamenova tallied a match-best 34 assists and 10 digs to round out the trio of double-doubles for NU.
All-CAA Third Team member
Nichole Kurz showcased another solid offensive performance, recording 12 kills on 24 swings, good for a match-best .458 attack percentage. Counterpart
Caterina Rosander hit .312 with five kills and added eight blocks to the Huskies' defensive efforts. Senior
Janelle Tucker posted a well-rounded performance with seven swings and 10 digs, while
Ava Cramp notched six kills and five blocks. Two-time Defensive Player of the Year
Natalia Skiba anchored the backcourt, tallying a match-best 19 digs and a service ace.
2013 CAA Player of the Year Darcy Dorton led a trio of Cougars in double-doubles with 19 kills and 13 digs. Sloane White and Melissa Morello joined Dorton in double-figures as White notched 15 kills (.306) and 10 digs while Morello tallied 13 swings and 14 digs.
A kill from Bredahl put the Huskies on the board first and kicked off a 3-0 run. Back-to-back NU errors and a swing from Melissa Morello evened the set, 4-4, before starting a contest of even play. Neither team budged as the frame came to 11-11, but consecutive swings from CofC gave the Cougars a 13-11 advantage. Charleston maintained a solid lead until the Huskies once against evened the set at the 19 mark. Tangled 25-25, CofC posted a couple of double blocks to close out the frame, 27-25.
The second frame started much like the first as neither team backed down out of the chute. The Huskies gained some momentum when a Kurz attack from the middle and a CofC error gave NU a two-point cushion. Tucker and Bacon paired up for a couple of kills to go ahead 12-9, but a strong offensive performance from Dorton put Charleston back in the set, 12-12.
A 3-0 surge put Northeastern back in control, 16-13, but CofC used a run of its own to even the score at 16. The contest was tied four more times before the Cougars put up a trio of kills to regain momentum and take a 24-21 advantage. In an attempt to stay alive, NU threw down three attacks to bring the score, 25-25, but it was not enough to stop CofC from taking the second set, 27-25.
Charleston recorded a quick 3-1 lead in the third frame before consecutive kills from Bacon put Northeastern back in, 3-3. Once again the stanza was tied multiple times until a right side Cramp attack and a solo block from Kurz gave the Huskies some breathing room, 8-6. NU maintained the lead through the core of the set; however, three CofC kills brought the score to 14-14.
Even at the 18 mark, Northeastern pushed a 7-1 run, capped with a solo block from Tucker, to stay alive with a 25-19 third-set victory.
The Cougars jumped on the board first, 4-1, and held a comfortable lead through the first exchanges. Down, 10-6, Kurz and Bacon threw down four kills to maintain momentum and even the score at 10. Both teams fought to the very end, exchanging the lead and tying the contest four times down the stretch. Trailing, 23-21, the Huskies looked to regroup with a timeout, but CofC closed out the fourth set with a Dorton kill, 25-23, to clinch the Colonial Athletic Association title, 3-1.
The Huskies closed out their 2013 slate with a 19-11 overall record and a 10-4 conference mark. Since joining the CAA in 2005, Northeastern has closed out six seasons with 19 or more wins.
