Rise Up with Northeastern hockey (GoNUxstream)
Northeastern vs. Vermont
Northeastern welcomes in Vermont for its second and final two-game weekend home stand of the 2012-13 season. The first meeting between the Huskies and Catamounts occurred at Gutterson Fieldhouse on Nov. 18 where UVM snapped Northeastern's four-game winning streak with a 3-2 triumph. Freshman phenom
Kevin Roy scored in the final minute to make it a one-goal game, marking his first-career two-goal game. Northeastern is victorious in its last two outings against UVM at Matthews Arena (2-0, Jan. 15, 2011 and 4-1, Nov. 19, 2011). In his first season,
Jim Madigan defeated Vermont all three games, marking the only team in Hockey East he accomplished that feat against. In all, Madigan is 3-1-0 against UVM while Kevin Sneddon has amassed a 15-10-5 mark against Northeastern. Heading into Friday, Vermont is in eighth place, three points ahead of 10th-place Northeastern.
Calling all Catamounts
Vermont skates into Friday's contest with nearly an identical overall mark as Northeastern (8-14-4) but has just won two of 11 games away from Gutterson Fieldhouse. After winning the Sheraton / TD Bank Catamount Cup on Dec. 29-30, topping Union (2-1) and Princeton (6-3), UVM went on a five-game tailspin and has gone 2-5-0 since the holiday tournament. Senior Chris McCarthy leads UVM's scoring efforts with 21 points (7-14-21) and is tied for 15th in Hockey East scoring. Sophomore Kyle Reynolds leads the Catamounts in goals scored with eight, which is tied for 20th in the conference. First-year netminder Brody Hoffman has started all 26 games and amassed a 2.88 goals against average and .905 save percentage, both ranking ninth in Hockey East. UVM's defense is surrendering 3.04 gpg (8th) while the offense is scoring at a clip of 2.23 gpg (9th).
MVP effort
After scoring five of Northeastern's six goals in the 2013 Beanpot Tournament,
Kevin Roy added to his sterling freshman season by earning Beanpot MVP honors on Feb. 11. Roy became the first Beanpot MVP of a second-place team since Boston University's Sean Field in 2004. Roy is the Huskies' fifth-ever MVP and Northeastern's first since Bruce Racine took home the award in 1988.
Honorable Huskies
Northeastern picked up three Hockey East awards on Feb. 11 after knocking off Boston University in the Beanpot semifinal on Feb. 4.
Kevin Roy was named Athletic Republic Player of the Week while
Chris Rawlings earned Hockey East Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors. The Huskies were also named Hockey East Team of the Week. In all, Northeastern has won nine league awards this season. Roy won HEA Rookie of the Month (Dec.), marking NU's first honor of that kind since Brad Thiessen in January 2007. Roy has won four awards this season whereas Rawlings wins his first as a senior and 12th of his career.
Top 100 countdown
Vinny Saponari is just seven points away from reaching the 100-point mark for his collegiate career. Granted, NU's captain scored 47 of his 93 points as a member of Boston University, but Saponari is just one point shy of matching his total at BU. The last time a Husky scored 100 total career points was when both Wade MacLeod (61-76-137 – 20th all-time) and Tyler McNeely (44-61-105 – tied for 43rd all-time) met the benchmark in 2010-11.
Captain playmaker
Vinny Saponari recorded a playmaker (three assists) in the Beanpot final, marking his 10th multi-point game at NU but his first three-point outing as a Husky.
Beanpot hangover
In Northeastern's next game immediately following the Beanpot, the Huskies are 22-35-3 and since joining Hockey East, NU has posted a mark of 9-16-3. Northeastern's record in its following game after finishing in second place is 4-5-1 with a 3-3-1 mark after joining the league.
Quick note
BC's goaltender Parker Milner assisted on Pat Mullane's empty net goal in the Beanpot championship, marking the first time the Huskies had a goaltender score a point on them since defending Stanley Cup champion Jonathan Quick turned the trick on Nov. 10, 2006, at UMass.
#MondayNightRoy
Thanks to
Kevin Roy's first career hat trick in his first-ever Beanpot Tournament appearance, the Huskies played in their 15th Beanpot title game. Roy became the first rookie skater to net a hat trick in his first Beanpot appearance since Boston College's Krys Kolanos on Feb. 7, 2000, in a 6-1 win over NU. The Lac-Beauport, Quebec, native became the first Husky to score a hat trick in the Beanpot since Mike Ryan netted three against Harvard on Feb. 8, 2002. Roy is also the first freshman to score the opening goal of the Beanpot since Boston College's Brock Bradford on Feb. 6, 2006. Roy followed that up with another Monday night performance of two goals in the championship game vs. Boston College.
Streakers
Vinny Saponar's playmaker on Feb. 11 helped match his season-best seven-game point streak in which he's accounted for 11 points (2-9-11).
Kevin Roy is on a career-high pooint streak, accounting for seven goals and two assists over the course of his last five games.
Rookie ruler
Heading into Friday's game against Vermont,
Kevin Roy is college hockey's top scorer amongst all first-year skaters. Roy's 32 points and 1.28 ppg is tops amongst all freshmen, as are his 0.71 goals per game. Nationally speaking, Roy is third in the country in goals per game and 10th in points per game. Roy is third overall in Hockey East scoring.
Back-to-back Beanpot games
With the cancellation of Northeastern's game at UMass on Friday, Feb. 8, the 61st Beanpot Tournament marked the first time the Huskies have skated in consecutive Beanpot contests since the 1990 tournament.
Second go-round in the Beanpot
With Northeastern's first round Beanpot triumph over BU,
Jim Madigan became NU's first ever second-year coach to win a semifinal game. Prior to Feb. 4, 2013, NU coaches in their second season at the helm had never placed higher than third in the Beanpot.
Pre-Beanpot history
Vinny Saponari's game-winning goal at Boston University on Jan. 18, 2013, carved out a special niche in Huskies' history. With that win, Northeastern has defeated all three Beanpot participants during the regular season before the actual start of the Beanpot Tournament. This has occurred just three times in school history. NU accomplished that feat under Jim Bell during the 1964-65 season followed by Bruce Crowder's 1997-98 club. In 1965, Northeastern placed third and in 1998, the Huskies finished fourth.
Roy-rking his rookie magic
Kevin Roy has scored 32 points (17-15-32) in 25 games as a rookie. The Lac-Beauport, Quebec native's 30-point benchmark stands as the seventh-consecutive season an incoming Husky has scored 20 or more points in a season, starting in 2006-07 with Chad Costello (11-11-22). Roy is the fastest to 20 points as a rookie since Jason Guerriero hit that same mark in his 18th-career game during the 2001-02 season. Roy is now one point away from the 10th-best rookie season in Northeastern history (Jordon Shields - 14-19-33 - 1992-93).
