Huskies drop 3-0 decision to No. 9 Boston College

DEDHAM, Mass. — The Northeastern field hockey team matched No. 9 Boston College for much of the afternoon on Sunday at Dedham Field, but the Eagles scored a pair of goals during a three-minute stretch midway through the second half to put the game out of reach and claim a 3-0 victory.

In an evenly played game, the crosstown rivals were nearly level in a number of statistical categories, including shots (10-8, BC) and penalty corners (5-4, BC).

Northeastern (3-6, 0-1 CAA) opened the game as the aggressor, registering the first two shots off fast-break chances. Emmy Zweserijn, who led all players with five shots, triggered both of the early attempts for the Huskies, which sailed just wide of the net.

Four minutes later, it was BC on the attack. The Eagles generated their first scoring opportunity of the afternoon by drawing a penalty corner. Romee Stiekema's shot was blocked and Emma Plasteras' chance off the rebound was turned away by NU goalkeeper Becky Garner.

After 11 minutes of back-and-forth action, the Eagles again used a corner to manufacture a scoring opportunity. But NU's Garner, again, was up to the task, setting aside a shot by Nina Baumberger.

Northeastern earned its first penalty corner at the 23-minute mark. Lindsay Bennett inserted the ball and Vanessa Pryor triggered a shot that went wide of the goal.

Just over three minutes later, Garner again came up big for the Huskies, registering a save on a shot by BC's Eryn McCoy off the Eagles' third corner of the half.

NU's Natalie Stewart and BC's Hannah Nedeau then traded shots — both missing wide — before the visitors broke the scoreless stalemate.

With Northeastern in possession deep in its own defensive zone, the Eagles' Chapin Duke intercepted a cross-field pass that resulted in a penalty corner with just 90 seconds remaining in the half. BC's Emily McCoy opted for the short option and fired a shot directly off the corner entry from Plasteras that found the back of the net, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead at the break.

Much like the first half, Northeastern opened the second frame with aggressive play. The Huskies earned a corner less than three minutes into the half. Zweserijn fired a shot off the Bennett entry, but BC's Leah Settipane made a diving save to preserve the 1-0 lead.

The Huskies continued to neutralize the Boston College attack until the midway point of the half. The Eagles, though, finally broke through and potted two goals in just over three minutes to seize control of the game. The first goal came by way of a penalty corner — BC's only corner of the half — as Emily McCoy fired home a shot. Leah Frome followed, tucking home an opportunity with 14:04 remaining on the clock to give the visitors a 3-0 lead.

The Eagles' defense limited the NU attack to just three shots the rest of the way. The Huskies, though, continued to battle. With five minutes remaining, Zweserijn triggered a shot that was blocked. Stewart corralled the rebound and rifled a shot on goal, but BC's Settipane made the save to thwart a comeback bid.

Northeastern will return to action on Wednesday night, when it hosts Massachusetts at Dedham Field at 6 p.m.
