BOSTON -Â After bumping heads with first-place Hofstra on Wednesday night, the Northeastern women's volleyball team will travel to South Carolina on Saturday, Oct. 11 to take on defending league champion and CAA-unbeaten College of Charleston at 7 p.m. The Huskies will take a short break from conference play on Sunday, Oct. 12 when the team takes on Big South member Campbell at 2 p.m.

All-time against CharlestonThe Cougars and Huskies had never met prior to 2013, but the two programs saw plenty of each other last year as College of Charleston competed in its first season in the CAA. After the Cougars defeated Northeastern at Cabot Center in four sets on Sept. 27, the Huskies became the first and only team to top Charleston in league play, coming back from two sets down to earn a 3-2 victory on Nov. 10. The two teams met again in the CAA championship match two weeks later, with No. 1 Charleston outlasting No. 2 Northeastern, 3-1.

Cougars 2013 season recapCollege of Charleston took the CAA by storm in its inaugural season in the league, finishing the year 25-6 (13-1 CAA) and locking up both the regular-season and postseason championships. The Cougars made quick work of No. 5 Hofstra in the league semifinals, but played four close sets against No. 2 Northeastern in the title match, winning the first two sets by identical 27-25 scores. Charleston drew No. 14 Duke in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, but fell to the Blue Devils, 3-1.

Charleston in 2014With ten players back from their CAA championship squad, the Cougars have picked up right where they had left off in 2013. Charleston has won each of its first four conference matches this season, and is currently in a first-place tie with unbeaten Hofstra. The Cougars have won five straight matches, including a five-set comeback victory against Towson after trailing 0-2.

Scouting the CougarsAs a team, College of Charleston leads the CAA with 17.00 digs per set, and is second in both kills per set (13.84) and assists per set (13.04). Middle blocker Cara Howley has added Offensive Player of the Week honors to her Preseason All-CAA Honorable Mention this season, and is sixth in the league with 3.35 kills per set. Sloane White and Maddie Hills each find themselves with hitting percentages in the top 10 of the conference, while senior Kallie McKown shares setting duties with teammate Mackenzie Cooler.

Fighting Camels 2013 season recapCampbell closed the 2013 season with a 14-17 (4-10 Big South) record, but was left out of the Big South Tournament, after finishing in ninth place. The Fighting Camels had mixed success against CAA teams last year, earning wins against William & Mary and UNCW while also falling to James Madison. Campbell's eight wins at home were tied for third best in the Big South, with five of those wins coming against non-conference opponents.

Campbell in 2014Coastal Carolina snapped the Camels' five-match winning streak with a 3-0 win on Saturday, but Campbell has still won seven out of its last nine matches. Earlier this season, the Camels swept away the competition in a tournament hosted by North Carolina Central, going a perfect 3-0. Campbell has earned the same results as Northeastern in three matches against common opponents, pulling wins against Rider and Elon while also falling to UNCW.

Scouting the Fighting CamelsLike College of Charleston in the CAA, Campbell also leads the Big South in digs per set at 16.56. Junior defensive specialist Mary Crema leads the Camels with 332 digs at 4.74 per set, and senior middle blocker Lorin Thomas rounds out the defense with 52 total blocks at 0.96 per set. Outside hitter Alexis Hein is Campbell's leading attacker this season, averaging 2.74 kills per set with 20 blocks and 10 aces. Summer Schuitema is also one assist shy of 500 on the year, averaging 7.80 per set.

Seeing doubleJamie Bredahl earned her ninth and 10th double-doubles of the 2014 season last week against Delaware and Towson. The 5-10 sophomore from Parker, Colorado netted 16 kills and 10 digs Friday night against the Blue Hens, and closed out the weekend with 11 kills and 11 digs Sunday afternoon against the Tigers. Bredahl also averages 0.30 aces per set, tied for sixth-best in the CAA.

On the road againThe Huskies' current five-match road trip is the second longest road trip the team has faced during this year. Northeastern opened the 2014 season with six straight matches away from Cabot Center, going 4-2 during the stretch. The Huskies will not return home until Friday, Oct. 24, when they play host CAA-newcomer Elon at 4 p.m.

Natalia Skiba is ranked third in the NCAA in total digs (403) and fifth in digs per set (5.68). The two-time CAA Defensive Player of the Week has also collected 10 or more digs in 15 consecutive matches. As a team, Northeastern averages 15.30 digs per set.

Alexa Armstrong earned her second highest hitting percentage of the season (.462) with six kills and no errors on 13 attacks Sunday against Towson. The 6-0 middle hitter from Del Mar, California now has six matches this year without recording an attacking error. Armstrong also hit for .333 and had eight kills against Hofstra on Wednesday.

Aces are wildAshlee Asada dialed up three aces against Towson last week for the third time this season. Asada is ninth in the CAA with a 0.26 aces per set average, three spots behind teammate
Jamie Bredahl, who has a 0.30 season average.

Running the offenseKristen Walding has great court vision for her teammates, averaging 10.89 assists per set during her last nine matches as the Huskies' primary setter. In her last three matches, the freshman from Deer Park, Illinois has netted 46 assists against Delaware, 38 against Towson, and 36 against Hofstra. Walding is third in the CAA this year with a 7.84 assists per set average.

Brigitte Burcescu is ranked 48th in the nation in total kills with 246, and is fifth among all NCAA freshmen. Burcescu's 3.46 kills per set average is tied for fourth best in the CAA.
