Season StatsPHILADELPHIA – The No. 16 Northeastern Huskies defeated the Drexel Dragons, 2-1, on Sunday, Oct. 12 to extend their winning streak to 11 games and improve their Colonial Athletic Association conference record to 2-0.
Â
This is the just the fourth time in program history the team has won 11 consecutive games. The last time they accomplished that feat was in 2005. The Huskies also competed in back-to-back overtime games for the first time since the 2007 season – 11th time in program history – and they earned victories in both games for the first time since 2002.
Â
Cheryl Murtagh's squad is now 6-0 on the road for just the fourth time ever and first time since 2005.
Â
The game-winning goal came off the stick of captain
Caroline Judge just 2:43 into the first overtime period. Judge was able to rip a shot from the right side of the circle that found its way past Jantien Gunter, Drexel's goalkeeper. The goal was unassisted and gives Judge her third marker of the season.
Â
With the win, the Huskies have now beaten the Dragons in Philadelphia for the first time since 2011. They are now also 2-0 in conference play for the first time since their inaugural season in the conference, 2005.
Â
Northeastern registered their first goal at the 41:20 mark of the game. Murtagh's squad has been very strong off the corner this season and that trend continued against the Dragons.
Emma Lamison inserted the ball on the corner. The play, however, broke down but
Natalie Stewart was able to keep her composure and put a shot on net that found its way past Gunter.
Â
The goal, which was unassisted, is Stewart's seventh of the season.
Â
The second half played out very similar to the first half. Neither team was able to establish an offensive presence, as both defenses stood tall time and time again.
Â
The Huskies put together two late scoring chances when sophomore
Vanessa Pryor registered her first shot of the game but the goalkeeper was able to turn it away to keep the game tied, 1-1. Just minutes later, with 20 seconds remaining, Lamison was able to put a shot on net, but again, Gunter made the save to keep the game tied.
Â
NU's goalkeeper
Becky Garner made two key saves late in the game to keep the score tied at one and force the overtime period.
Â
Drexel scored the first goal of the game at the 21:55 mark. Christina Conrad was able to control a loose ball inside the arc and put it on net. The ball found its way past Garner to give the Dragons the 1-0 lead. It was Conrad's sixth goal of the season.
Â
The first half started out slow for the Huskies on offense, as they were unable to register a shot and only earned one penalty corner. Their best scoring chance of the half came off the corner, but the ball trickled away from the Husky attackers and they were unable to put together a scoring chance.
Â
Garner, however, showcased her skills and turned away four shots to keep the Huskies within striking distance and only behind 1-0.
Â
In the game's first 10 minutes, both teams combined for one shot and no corners. The lone shot came off the stick of Drexel's Rachel Sumfest, which Garner turned away to keep the game scoreless.
Â
The Huskies are back in action next Sunday, Oct. 19, when they take on a New England rival in the University of Maine Black Bears. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Dedham Field. Buses will be available for students looking to attend the game.
