Box Score

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Despite dropping the first two sets of the match to Campbell, the Northeastern women's volleyball team rallied for its third five-set comeback victory of the season, defeating the Fighting Camels 3-2 (19-25, 14-25, 25-15, 25-13, 15-8) on Sunday afternoon.

Freshman outside hitter Brigitte Burcescu slammed 15 attacks down for kills against Campbell, and finished the match with five blocks and five digs as well.

Senior co-captain Alexa Armstrong led the Huskies with a .474 hitting percentage, posting ten kills on 19 attacks with only one error to go along with four blocks.

Jamie Bredahl earned her 11th double-double of the 2014 season after collecting 11 kills, 11 digs, three assists, and an ace on the afternoon. Freshman Kristen Walding also picked up her fifth double-double of the season with 38 assists and 16 digs, and also sent home a season-high seven kills in the match.

Northeastern (9-11, 1-5 CAA) saw great defensive play from senior captain Natalia Skiba who netted 22 digs, seven assists, and three aces. Caterina Rosander started the final three sets for the Huskies, blocking six Campbell attacks and hitting for .500 with five kills and no attacking errors. Ava Cramp also stifled six attacks for NU, helping the Huskies out-block the Camels 12.0-7.0.

Campbell (10-11, 2-3 Big South) out-hit Northeastern .333-.107 in the first two sets of the match, but the Huskies hit for .337 in the final three sets, compared to the Camels' hitting percentage of .060. Katelyn Layden had 16 kills and 15 digs for Campbell, while Summer Schuitema notched 40 assists and 20 digs.

Northeastern countered an early 4-1 Campbell lead in the first set with three unanswered points to tie the match at 4-4. After the Camels had pulled ahead 11-7, Walding and Bredahl each set the other up for back-to-back Husky kills, keeping Northeastern alive in the first, down just 11-9.

Campbell was quick to open a 15-10 advantage, but the Huskies responded with a four-point run to cut the deficit back to one at 15-14. However, the Camels strung two separate three-point runs together to build a 22-16 lead, and kept Northeastern at bay en route to a 25-19 first set win.

Both teams remained evenly matched in the second set, until Campbell broke through with a seven-point run that saw the Camels take a 14-6 lead, causing Huskies head coach Ken Nichols to call timeout. Trailing 17-7, Northeastern scored five out of the next six points thanks to two kills by Rosander, and closed Campbell's lead to 18-12. However, the Camels were able to connect on five kills down the stretch in the second set, winning it 25-14 and taking a 2-0 lead in the match.

Having earned comeback wins from 0-2 down against Florida International and TCU earlier this season, the Huskies came out of the mid-match break with every intention of going the distance against Campbell. Northeastern's front row registered two blocks as a part of a 5-0 run to start the third set, and back-to-back blocks by Cramp and Armstrong put the Huskies in front 8-2.

NU continued to execute offensively in the third set, scoring four unanswered to lead 13-4, and a kill by Walding later gave the Huskies a 17-8 advantage. Campbell would cut the lead to as close as seven at 20-13, but the Huskies rattled off five of the last seven points in the set to win it 25-15.

Coming off a dominant performance in the third set, Northeastern jumped out to a 9-2 lead early in the fourth off six kills and two blocks. After Campbell scored three unanswered to pull within five at 12-7, the Huskies went on another 8-2 run that blew the doors off the fourth set and put NU back in the driver's seat, up 20-9. With no timeouts, Campbell could not slow down the Huskies late in the set, and Northeastern tied the match up at 2-2 with a 25-13 win in the fourth.

With momentum on their side, the Huskies burst out of gates in the fifth set scoring six of the first seven points, and five points later had built a 9-3 lead on Campbell. A kill by Lorin Thomas brought the Camels to within four points at 10-6, but Northeastern dropped three straight points with kills by Bredahl and Walding to lead 13-6. The Huskies won the match four points later, 15-8 in the fifth set, off back-to-back kills by Cramp and Burcescu.

With the victory, Northeastern completes its non-conference schedule with an 8-6 record, having won four of its last five matches against non-CAA competition. The Huskies will end their five-match road trip next weekend with two matches against James Madison on Friday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m., and against William & Mary on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.
