Delaware tops Northeastern, 3-1

Northeastern split the first two sets with Delaware, but came up short to the Blue Hens, 3-1
Box Score

BOSTON - After splitting the first two sets with Delaware on Friday night, the Northeastern women's volleyball team could not quite hold off the Blue Hens late in the match, as the Huskies were defeated 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 25-21, 25-15).

Jamie Bredahl and Brigitte Burcescu each led the Huskies with double-digit kills, finishing the match with 16 and 12 kills, respectively.

Outside hitter Ava Cramp had her best match of the season against the Blue Hens, landing eight kills on 14 attacks with two errors for a hitting percentage of .429.

Senior libero Natalia Skiba posted a match-high 23 digs in the Northeastern back row, while teammate Ashlee Asada netted 10 digs as well.

Kristen Walding surpassed the 40-assist mark for the fifth time in her freshman season, and also picked up seven digs. Caterina Rosander blocked four Delaware attacks to go along with her three kills.

Delaware (8-10, 1-2 CAA) saw exceptional attacking from junior middle hitter Chandler Bryant, who hit for .692 and threw down 20 kills on 26 attacks. Katie Hillman, Alexa Swann, and Autumn Jenkins also earned double-digit kills for the Blue Hens.

Northeastern (8-8, 1-2 CAA) had difficulty stopping the Delaware offense early in the first set. Back-to-back kills from Hillman gave the Blue Hens a 12-8 lead, causing NU head coach Ken Nichols to call timeout. The Huskies would chip away at the Delaware lead, and two straight attacking errors by the Blue Hens brought Northeastern back to within two, down just 19-17. Despite two successive kills by Rosander and Cramp, Delaware proved to be too much to handle late in the set, and went on to win it 25-20.

The Huskies kept even with Delaware early in the second set, pulling ahead 5-4 and 8-7 before a kill by Hannah Fry made it 10-9 Northeastern. Skiba would set up Fry for the kill again four points later, and another kill from Burcescu gave NU some breathing room up 13-10.

However, Delaware would come back, tying the set at 13-13, and again later at 19-19. Walding would soon find Burcescu to put the Huskies up 22-21, and an ace from Fry put Northeastern up for good, sealing the second set 25-22.

Much like the second set, neither team was determined to pull away from the other early in the third set. With the score tied at 10-10, Northeastern capitalized on an attack error by Daria Robinson, followed by a block by Burcescu and Rosander that put the Huskies up by two. Delaware would soon tie the set again at 12-12, and both teams traded points until a kill by Swann put the Blue Hens in front 22-20. Northeastern would fail to execute defensively down the stretch, and Delaware would go on to win the third set, 25-21.

After Rosander landed a kill to put the Huskies up 1-0 in the fourth set, the Blue Hens stormed out of the gate with seven unanswered points, and a kill by Bryant a few points later gave Delaware its largest lead of the set, 11-3. Northeastern would cut the deficit to as close as six at 17-11, but the Blue Hens were in the driver's seat the rest of the way, taking the fourth set 25-15, and winning the match 3-1.

Northeastern hosts CAA rival Towson on Sunday, Oct. 5 at 1 p.m. at Cabot Center.
